Not welcome
Afghan refugees being sent back to Afghanistan

Photos by Ali Khaligh

The Iranian

Imagine Germany loading tens of thousands of Iranian refugees onto buses and sending them back to Iran. Of course, it would never happen. The international community would be outraged. Germany would be accused of racism and intolerance.

So does anyone have a good reason why Afghans have to be expelled from Iran? Are Afghans taking away jobs from Iranians? Are many of them involved in crime? Aren't these the same excuses Western countries use against undesirable refugees? What happened to that Persian hospitality we always brag about? >>> GO TO FEATURE

The Iranian

The reformists have a commanding majority in the new Majlis. But will they be able to carry out their promises? Will they be able to realize the electorate's demand for change? Will they be able to legislate reforms despite expected opposition from the conservative Council of Guardians? Here are the views of two political scientists (RealAudio in Persian) >>> GO TO FEATURE

Demography holds Iran's destiny

By Farzaneh Roudi
May 31, 2000
The Iranian

The opening of the sixth Iranian parliament on May 27 has demonstrated that popular reforms in Iran initiated by President Mohammad Khatami are irreversible. For the first time since 1979 revolution, supporters of the reform movement in Iran hold a solid majority in the parliament, where the average age of the new members is 15 years younger than that of the outgoing members.

The demographic process is pervasive. Young Iranians were responsible for the reformers' win in the recent parliamentary elections, as they were in the 1997 election of moderate Khatami. One-quarter of the Iranian population is between the ages of 15 and 25. The coming of age of a huge cohort of young Iranians living in cities in the information age is changing the face of the Islamic Republic >>> GO TO FEATURE
