* Forough Farrokhzad, Carnegie Hall

NEW YORK, November 19, 2000 ­ The New York-based Ensemble Sospeso, a chamber orchestra specializing in contemporary music, will be presenting three world premieres on their December 12, 2000, 8:00 PM concert at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.

The concert of predominately vocal works features the world premiere of The wind will carry us by Ensemble Sospeso Co-Director Kirk Noreen on a text by Forugh Farrokhzad, perhaps Iran's greatest modern woman poet. * $20,000 academic grant for new Americans

What: The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans

What: Each year (max of 2yrs) the Fellow receives a maintenance grant of $20,000 (paid in two installments) and a tuition grant of one-half the tuition cost of the U.S. graduate program attended by the Fellow.

* Persian mummies must be returned to Iran - Letter

Please provide your comments regarding the following letter. Moreover, if you are interested in signing the final version of this letter, please send an e-mail to Professor Mohammad Ala (mala@calstatela.edu): Recent news of five mummies in their sarcophagus which were stolen from Iran, and at present time are in Pakistan, concerns us a great deal. You can nominate Ahmad Batebi for a student peace prize in Norway. Batebi was arrested during the student protests in the summer of 1999. A new collection of writing aims to bring together the chorus of voices by and about women of the Iranian Diaspora. We are seeking submissions of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction essays for a new collection of writing by and about Iranian women in the Diaspora. Works that particularly challenge the notion of a homogeneous Iranian female and that reflect a feminist perspective are encouraged. * Helping drought victims in Iran

Iranian Health Foroum e-News (www.iranianhealthforum.org) -- To help the victims of Iran's worst drought in 30 years, donors can make their contributions directly to the Iranian government or to relevant UN agencies. (See news here)

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is prepared to serve as a channel for unearmarked contributions to be used for relief assistance. These will then be allocated in consultation with theGovernment of Iran and relevant organizations in the United Nations system.

An unprecedented attack has started against the press in Iran. Some 22 newspapers, weeklies, and other publications have been ordered shut by the judiciary. We condemn the closing of the newspapers and the jailing of their editors and writers. We support freedom of expression for all.
