Do as Americans do: fight for your rights in court
By Abolala Soudavar
February 8, 2001
The Iranian
In America one should do as the Americans do: one should fight for one's
rights in court. Minorities and foreigners however, are generally reluctant
to do so. They are unaccustomed to legal proceedings and find it difficult
to challenge authority in a way that their cultural heritage ill-prepared
them for >>>

In defense of Persian Watch Cat
February 7, 2001

Editor's note: Since the publication of Guive Mirfendereski's commentary
"Power of one", senior members of Persian Watch Cat (PWC), the
Iranian anti-discrimination group, have demanded the removal of the article,
or certain words and phrases. They have threatened to take The Iranian
to court for "defamation" if their demands are not met. I have
invited the PWC to write a reply explaining why they believe Dr. Mirfendereski
is wrong. So far the PWC has refused. But the following is an unedited
reply from one of the group's members >>>

Memo to self: With the popularity of reality-based TV series, make a
quick buck or two by pitching the following ideas to network executives:
Castration Island: Place a few intellectuals and proponents of
democracy and free speech in the midst of a conservative-run administration
and watch sparks fly as the intellectuals are hunted down one by one, put
on sham trials, and sent to internal exile. Will they survive Castration

I was hated not because my skin was particularly any darker than the
British boys I went to boarding school with. If anything, in the years
since, I've come to think maybe they hated me for the opposite reason,
for the jarring proximity of my color to their own pale skins. There was
an element of the subversion of the natural order of things in my not being
anything other than white.
We were Wogs, after all. Golliwogs, Woggies, Paks, Pakis; you name the

Dear Buddy,
I hope you are all in good health and that life is treating you well.
In your letter you say that you have decided to come to England to continue
your education and asked me about life in this country. If you are curious
to know what we are doing here, let me quench your thirst and tell you,
from my point of view, about how life is in this part of the British Isles
