Interview with film director Ramin Serry

By Bruce Bahmani
March 8, 2001
The Iranian

Recently I met an amazing young man. His name is Ramin Serry and he is a film director. The American reaction to the hostage crisis after the 1979 revolution affected him so deeply as a teenager that he has now made a movie which I think is amazing. The movie releases in the SF film festival this week and you should see it if you can. It will likely move to the community later and there is a definite buzz on this one folks! Anyhow, what better way to continue on with my series on exciting Iranians doing exciting things! What follows is my interview with Ramin >>> GO TO FEATURE

Totalitarianism does not work, not even in Iran

By Daniel Zangeneh

The Iranian

There was the aroma of kabab, ghormeh sabzi, beer and wine, mixed with Persian music. People were mingling and having a good time. I didn't know anyone except my friend Davood and his wife Shrine, who insisted on going to their friend's (an Iranian doctor) party >>> GO TO FEATURE

Asghar Shah
I hereby proclaim myself King of Kings

By Asghar Agha
March 7, 2001
The Iranian

I read Mihandoust's article about Reza Pahlavi, "My friend", and I came up with an idea.

Proclamation

I hereby proclaim myself King of Persia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. I am Asghar, heretofore known as Asghar Shah, because we never had an Asghar Shah in our history.

During my last ski trip, some friends and I rented a condo and I insisted on sleeping on the couch. Such humility, rare among Iranians, should qualify me as King of Kings >>> GO TO FEATURE

Film

Hadji Baba
Persian adventure made into Hollywood film

By Darius Kadivar
March 7, 2001
The Iranian

In the early 50's Hollywood director Don Weis was inspired by the main character in the classic novel, "The Adventures of Hadji Baba", written by 19th century British Ambassador to Persia, James Morier. Weis decided to adapt the story for the silver screen. He chose John Derek, the Leonardo Di Caprio of his time, to play the lead role, along with Elaine Stewart, and Paul Picerni >>> GO TO FEATURE

Gholam-Reza Mohajeri-Nejad was giving a talk at a Washington, D.C., gathering about Iran's student movement. He spoke about the period leading to the July 1999 uprising, when zealots stormed the dormitories at Tehran University. At least one student was killed and hundreds were injured. Mohajeri-Nejad, 29, was a witness to the uprising. Now he is in the United States to share his observations >>> GO TO FEATURE

By Karim Azari
March 5, 2001
The Iranian

"Did you see the Shah's son speaking at the Press Club a few days ago?" I asked casually, making sure to use an impartial tone.

He raised his eyebrows and his jaw slowly dropped. His incredulity gave me the impression that this was much bigger news than I initially thought.

"Ehhhh?" he replied, still awestruck. "You saw Shah Hassan at de Price Club?" >>> GO TO FEATURE

Reza

Reza Pahlavi's humility and friendliness has never changed

By Mihandoust

The Iranian

I have known Reza Pahlavi since we were both ten-years old. I come from a middle-class, educated family. I did well at school. We had a common teacher who recommended me to attend Reza's school. I am writing this because I feel my compatriots may possibly gain some useful insight into the real personality of one of their public figures >>> GO TO FEATURE

Report

Rather bleak
Iran from an expatriate businessman's point of view

By A. Peeroozi
March 2, 2001
The Iranian

I met with a cross section of Iranian businessmen and one businesswoman. My overall assessment was rather bleak. The level of expertise for running and managing companies is very low compared to many other Asian countries. I met with attorneys regarding business laws in Iran. These meetings were not very encouraging. I found that the laws are absolutely anti-business >>> GO TO FEATURE
