* Weightlifter prays to prophets, wins gold
BANGKOK, Dec 11 (Reuters) - With a prayer to the prophets and look towards
heaven, Shahin Nassiri Nia clean and jerked 210 kg in the men's 85 kg division
and grabbed Iran's fourth gold of the Asian Games on Friday. Nassiri Nia
said he regularly clean and jerked 215 kg in practice, and said he would
go for the world record of 218 kg next year. ``I'm happy for my country
to win the medal,'' Nassiri Nia said after the competition where he also
tied an Asian record in the snatch with 170 kg... FULL

BANGKOK, Dec 10 (Reuters) - Favourites Iran resurrected their hopes
of a quarter-final place in the Asian Games soccer tournament on Thursday
with a crushing 5-0 win over Tajikistan. Iran, stunned in their opening
second round group match by a 4-2 defeat at the hands of tiny Oman despite
bringing their World Cup squad to Bangkok, went for goals from the start

* Soccer: Iran tumble to shock defeat
BANGKOK, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Oman stunned Iran 4-2 on Tuesday in their
opening second round group match at the Asian Games with a victory that
left their normally voluble Brazilian coach Valdeir Viera groping for words.
``I don't know how I feel,'' said the coach Iran sacked last year after
only three games in charge. ``If we played Iran 10 times, I don't think

on Tuesday, failing to win a single gold medal in five events they were

SYDNEY, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Former Australian soccer stars are fuming
after a decision to reshuffle the distribution of qualifying spots for
the 2002 World Cup left the country facing the prospect a showdown with
a South American opponent for a place in the finals. FIFA said on Friday
that the winners of the Oceania zone, likely to be either Australia or
New Zealand, would play a team from South America for a place in the finals,
being co-hosted by Japan and South Korea. Australia failed to reach this
year's World Cup finals after losing to Iran in their final round play-off,
