* Call for Papers: Qajar art

THE QAJAR EPOCH Culture, Art & Architecture in Qajar Persia 2-4 September 1999 The 'Qajar Epoch' conference will be held at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London from the 2nd until the 4th of September 1999. The focus of the conference will be on the Culture, Art & Architecture of the Qajar period. The conference is part of a two conference series. The second conference, which will focus on Religion and Society of the Qajar Period, will be held in September 2000.

The purpose of the conferences is to invite both established and younger scholars in the field to present their most recent research, new interpretations or assessments of the period. Papers must be presented either in English or Persian and should not exceed 35 minutes so as to allow 10 minutes for discussion. The organisers reserve the right to refuse any proposal not corresponding to the object and the academic level of the conference. Papers will be presented by theme and arranged by subject in sequential sessions... DETAILS HERE

* Samira Makhmalbaf claims her own spotlight

Newsweek, Oct 19, 1998 - Samira Makhmalbaf is running late for another interview. "This must be what it's like to have a teenager," mutters the New York publicist who has been hired to help promote "The Apple," Makhmalbaf's debut feature film. Her client has a good excuse--she is a teenager. She is also Iranian, and, at 18, the youngest person ever to show a feature work at the New York Film Festival. A curious and often percussive mix of Middle Eastern melodies, Latin rhythms, contemporary dance beats, Western pop themes and fusion jazz coloring, the duo's concert offered a globe-trotting blend of the familiar and the exotic... * Shahin & Sepehr: From myriad travels comes a 'World Cafe'

Washington Post, Oct 16 - WHEN Shahin Shahida was a seventh-grader at the International School of Tehran some 25 years ago, he was a precociously good guitar player, a fact that earned him a pass into the cooler circles of the older kids, like ninth-grader Sepehr Haddad. Sepehr (who, like Shahin, prefers to be called by simply his first name) played a pretty decent guitar too, and the two of them often found themselves playing together. With their fourth CD, "World Cafe," recently released by Higher Octave records, Shahin & Sepehr find their profile high enough in "world beat" circles that they can regularly tour abroad. "We were in Italy this summer and got interviewed on national TV," says Shahin, "and the woman at the station showed us all these magazines with reviews and articles about us. I had no idea we were getting so much attention!"... FULL TEXT
