Praised by the New York Times as "devastaging" and "heartbreaking,"
"Leila" is the lastest film from Iranian Director Dariush Mehrjui,
and illuminates the often brutal clash between modernity and Islamic tradition.
Focusing on a wealthy couple who married out of love but are unable to
conceive children, the story focuses on the agony and confusion felt by
Leila as her husband is forced to consider taking a second wife, leaving
her isolated from both her families.

* Christine Mirzayan murdered in Washington, DC
Tuesday's Washington Post reported: The woman found beaten to death
in Georgetown [Washington, DC] over the weekend has identified as Christine
M. Mirzayan, a highly regarded 28-year-old biologist who apparently was
attacked as she walked home alone Saturday night from a barbecue at the
house of a fellow intern at the National Research Council... FULL
TEXT
On this sad occasion, I wish to propose that we the Iranian and Iranian-American
communities commemorate the loss of this young woman in some fashion --
perhaps by setting up a reward fund for the apprehension of the perpetrator
of the crime against her, or helping her husband/family in some other manner.
I shall offer to organize this effort. Let me tell you a bit about myself
to put you at greater ease with the idea. My vitals are below for those
of you who do not know me:
Full Name: Haleh Vaziri
Citizenship: U.S., born in Michigan of Iranian parents in 1963
Profession: Assistant Professor, Researcher & Writer in International
Politics
Current Place of Residence: Washington, DC
Email: HVaziri@aol.com
Please contact me by email if you are interested in this proposal, and
perhaps we can all put our heads together. I sincerely believe that this
tragedy should compel each and every one of us to reflect on the fragility
of life. We should put aside our differences -- political, religious, or
otherwise -- to act as a community and assist the authorities and/or the
family in whatever way we can.

* Are you Iranian-American? Want to be in a film?
I am making a film in Iran which starts shooting in Feb 1999. One of
the things I am doing when I come back to the United States in looking
for an actor. I need a man around 24-years old who speaks Persian with
an accent and is willing to come to Iran for 2+ months and have the lead
role in this film. An Iranian-American. I was thinking the Internet would
be a good place to start. they could contact me via email, then perhaps
send a photo or short video.
