to azad and benross, the word shah used as prefix or suffix may have other meanings than king or ruler.  it can mean "big" as shahrah (public road, big and wide road), or shahrag.  as a suffix, it can also mean big (rah shah; see kehkhoda). it can mean "many" or "momtaz" as in shahtoot (toot kalan, toot momtaz noe' khod; see dehkhoda).  otherwise, benross, with your interpretation shahtoot would have a totally different meaning. ;)

روز ۲۵ اردیبهشت روز بزرگداشت حکیم ابوالقاسم فرودسی نویسنده و سراینده شاهنامه، شاهکار ادبیات زبان پارسی می‌باشد .

ما ایرانیان دوستدار فرهنگ پارسی روز فردوسی را گرامی و پاس داشته و از او برای بجا گذاشتن این میراث ادبیاتی سپاس گذاری می‌کنیم .

این سخن زیبا گفته شده که اگر پاسارگاد پایتخت سیاسی سرزمین پارس بوده، توس به برکت فرودسی و شاهنامه پایتخت ادبیاتی و فرهنگی ایران می‌باشد .

شاهنامه داستان نبرد نیکی با بدی، نبرد نور با تاریکی است که روشن ترین آن نبرد فریدون و کاوه اهنگر و با ضحاک ستمگر می باشد .

در شاهنامه پهلوانان کاری جز خدمت به ایران زمین نمی کنند و برای رسیدن به آرمان های خود از مرگ هراسی ندارند. آنها از خفت در کنج خانه نشستن بیزار بوده و با رفتن دلاورانه به آغوش مرگ، زندگی را از آن می ربایند .  

ویژه گی شایان فردوسی در این است که او با نگارش شاهنامه بار دیگر به ایرانیان که سالیان درازی زیر یوغ اعراب و خلفای عباسی بودند، هویت پارسی داده و ایرانیان را از خود بیگانگی و اسارت فرهنگی بیگانگان در آورده است .

Darius, that Soviet film is

Darius, that Soviet film is hilarious! How 'bout that Rus accent of the narrator in the beginning. The film's either dubbed (most likely) or the YouTube sound tracking is off. The costumes are so hokey, it almost makes one appreciative of those in 300. Almost. 

It's funny to see non-Iranians play Iranians. Case in point, the upcoming Prince of Persia film. Have you seen the billboards? Jake Gyllenhaal sports a good Iranian muslim beard. Being half-Jewish, he almost pulls it off. Almost.

Another non-Iranian that came close was that Egyptian actor that played the leading role in Kite Runner. Technically he played an upper middle class Afghani. (Did he even speak Dari? I can't remember.) But let's face it, Afghanistan is part of Irān-e Bozorg.

Dari, Persian and Farsi are all the same language. 

Dari is short for "Darbari" meaning "of royal court", which was a form of Persian language spoken during the rule of Sassanian kings in greater Iran.

You can use Persian for all these variants, including Tajiki. Shahnameh is understood by all Persian speakers of the world, be them Daris, Farsis, Persians or Tajikis.

   Thank you for your beautiful and timely artwork. Finally I read about Ferdowsi......wow! He was great! I am little surprised that Wikipedia says Shahnameh was written in Dari, which is the language spoken by people in Afghanistan...so I guess it is easier for the Afghans to read Shahnameh? I thought Dari & Farsi are considered 2 separate languages.....last year I read in LA Times that US army is hiring Dari and Farsi speakers.

Saint of kiaan. Ferdowsi was, is & will be a sanctified icon of true Iran. Every day is Ferdowsi day. Cyrus was the founder & yet Ferdowsi was the saviour of Iran & Kiaan. He truly is the "eye, I" in "Iran" and the "Pie, P" in "Persian".

Thanks for suggesting Katouzian's book. I will probably read it this summer.

About the Royalty in Canada, we are actually divided. Plus, we are so laid back that until something hurt us concretely we won't act on it :-).

For Iran, I prefer a Democratic Republic to Constitutional Monarchy. However, I am not against the latter if people vote for it in a referendum!

Something more general about the Royalty: the concepts of King, Queen, Prince and Princess, which are present in many fairytales across the globe, are deeply rooted in humanity's collective unconscious. Furthermore, as long as the Persian culture exists, we'll be hearing about kings and queens and their deeds as reflected in Shahnameh - whether we'll have them in flesh and bones or not. This must be a huge comfort for you :-)).

Well I know you want to do away with monarchy in Canada. That's incentive enough to 'explore' other meanings for something you don't want to do away with. That's what I meant by 'nice try'. And I meant it in a bon enfant way. Don't take offense.

As for other meanings of Shah as prefix, well it doesn't remove the meaning of Shah. It adds all the greatness that we (Persians) attributed to the king and the literature and even wording structures were affected by it. But Shahnameh, if it's not the book of gods, it's the book of kings. It's not a 'major' book, like 'major' highway as 'shahrah'.

Besides, just read Shahnameh and see what it's all about! Our history, which is always closely tied to the history of our kings.

btw, if you haven't read 'The Persians' of Homa Katouzian yet, that's a MUST READ. I'm truly enjoying it.

As I understand Shahnameh tried to salvage what was written in Khodaai Naameh (The book of God) which didn't survive the turmoil. This is what is noted in Persian Wikipedia:

شایان ذکر است که کتاب بسیار عظیمی در اواخر روزگار ساسانی به نام خوتای نامگ (خدای‌نامه) تالیف شده بود که به یک معنا کتاب تاریخ رسمی شاهنشاهی به شمار می‌آمد. روزبه پسر دادوویه با کنیهٔ عربی «عبدالله بن مقفع» یا همان ابن مقفع مترجم کلیله و دمنه آن را به عربی ترجمه کرد. این کتاب یکی از مآخذ تقریباً همهٔ تاریخنگاران سده‌های آغازین اسلامی به شمار می‌آمد. از خوتای نامگ در شاهنامه با نامنامهٔ خسروان یاد شده‌است. «خوتای» برابر پهلوی «خدای» است که به معنی پادشاه به کار می‌رفته‌است. معنی مشابهی برای خدا هنوز هم در نامهایی چون «کدخدا» دیده می‌شود.

BTW, is it true that Ferdowsi's The Shah-Nameh, which most of us assumed meant The Book of Kings, in fact means The Great Book? It is argued that in Persian, the word Shah means Great when used as a prefix. (I suspect that this is made up by the Islamists, but I'm not sure!)
