I hope that FR's question will initiate an educated/unbiased series of comments from which I might find an answer to my own question: Has shiism ever been an honest broker of nationalism in/for Iran?

Amir Kabir is truly a national hero of historic dimensions. One cannot doubt his sincerity in riding Iran off the foreign and colonial influence. He was a moderniser and a patriot. Sadly his drive to cleanse Iran of the foriegn influence and lackies came to an abrupt end by Nasseraldin Shah's order (under the influence of his mother and the complicity of Mirza Agha Khan--Nouri, who succeeded Amir Kabir) to have him killed in the Fin bathhouse, Kashan.

But when it comes to pass a judgement on him in terms of secularism and separation of state from religion, I advise caution.

Amir Kabir's brutal suppression of Babism which started by the execution of Bab in Tabriz and followed by Babi-koshi in Zanjan and Neyriz remain as the most questionable, if not the darkest, period in his  short term in office. What is not clear is what were his motives. It was well known that Amir was as a staunch Shiite. Was his drive to out-root Babism triggered by the influence of religious beliefs (which was in turn  by supported by Nassereddin Shah's religious and superstitious beliefs)? Or was it out of his conviction that the Bab movement was a foreign ploy to undermine his government? Or a combination of the two?
