BBC: Some newspapers in Iran retouched a photograph of EU foreign policy chief Baroness Ashton to make her outfit less revealing, an Iranian website reports. Asriran.com showed Iranian press pictures of Lady Ashton next to Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, with her black top raised higher than in the original. They had held talks in Istanbul on Iran's controversial nuclear programme. Iranian papers often retouch images, a BBC Persian Service journalist says. Cyrus Amini, who worked in Iranian print media in 1998-2003, said the practice was "quite usual and understandable" because of the differences between Western and Iranian culture >>>

sobhThu Jan 27, 2011 09:39 AM PST

Clarification
by Abarmard on Thu Jan 27, 2011 08:52 AM PSTBBC has gotten this news from the Iranian media, meaning that even Iranian media criticised this act. Reading this page presents a different picture and BBC is not correct in reporting:
"Asriran.com showed Iranian press pictures of Lady Ashton next to Iran's
chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, with her black top raised higher
than in the original".
One reading this assumes that asr Iran, an Iranian media has " showed Iranian press pictures of Lady Ashton next to Iran's
chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, with her black top raised higher
than in the original"
No. asriran showed the image as it is in BBC page, telling us that some "other" papers had modified this image. Telling the story correctly makes a big difference. There were two reports about this incedent in asr Iran, and the latest is what BBC has copied. Here is the original and as you can see, both images are present.

by ghalam-doon on Thu Jan 27, 2011 06:12 AM PSTOf course one cannot blame the so-called press in Iran, since they don't want their license revoked for publishing lewd pictures.
I liked the caption below the picture:

by asadabad on Thu Jan 27, 2011 03:44 AM PSTThe IRI is worse than Goebbels. This reminds me of Stalins photo manipulations with nikolai yezhov. Curiously enough, the iranian government constantly uses the arabic word "Kafir" (to cover/conceal) to describe evil people. I think they are spot on.

by yolanda on Wed Jan 26, 2011 09:06 PM PSTIt reminds me of the scandal 2 years ago that IRI photoshopped their missile launch to make themselves look more powerful!
