U.S. Military: Beyond Primacy

Rethinking American Grand Strategy

New America Foundation: Mounting concern over America's long-term fiscal position may bring about sizable cuts in U.S. military spending. But these cuts need not compromise U.S. national security if the United States makes the right adjustments in its military posture and grand strategy. Sameer Lalwani and Joshua Shifrinson, along with Lawrence Korb, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, and Flynt Leverett, the Director of New America's Iran Initiative, discuss the command of the commons and the future of American grand strategy.

VATANAM

US creates wars and enemies to justify military spending!

by VATANAM on

Communism, china, islamist, alqaeda, Iran's Nuclear etc and 911 are all what they need to have in order to get the defense industry going. Military complex chooses the persidents, senators/congressmen who support their defense spending. In fact, no senator dares voting against them. Limitless spending and collapsing our economy as a consequense. Defense Mafia!

No wonder, Obama who is against the war is helpless and when saudis were supposedly behind the 911. they invade iraq and afghanestan and aiming for iran which had nothing to do with 911. So they are playing all thes grand games with the people of the world. Evil minds.

Re good guys

by Arj on

Dear Amirparviz..., compared to the likes of Pearle, Bolton, Cristole, krauthammer and Rumsfeld, these guys are hippies! At least they don't advocate drawing the first blood! Whereas, Neocons, their tea-bagging partners and their exceptionalist mentality could very well push the whole world (and not just the U.S.) to the brink of destruction!

amirparvizforsecularmonarchy

Arj I doubt the USA is seen as the good guys wearing white hats

by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on

Considering they use and fund Islamic fundamentalism to meet imperialistic aims.  These guys betrayed Iran and the shah in order to steal it's wealth and hinder its progress.  They have more in common with gangsters than good guys.  Weakening US Power intelligently is going to be tough, that may not invite peace, but due to the destiny they chose they have no choice today but to drastically reduce their bloated budget or else they will get destroyed economically which defeats their purpose.  They miss the complexity of their own problems and try to make it more simple than it is.  Their power will be contested, whether they like it or not, as it is not based on a lawful approach but through inhumanity.

That doesn't guarantee that what replaces them won't be unlawful either.

No military spending is more unjustified than that of Israel.................

Arj

The gist

by Arj on

Interesting discussion, yet the gist of the argument boils down to the points in between 3:15 and 5:30. These guys are supposed to be a the good guys and rational, yet they openly advocate U.S. free riding upon its allies (that is oil rich allies since Europe is not in a condition to do so)! Kind of like choosing the first !raqi invasion (Desert storm and the deal with Kuwait) over the OEF and OIF types due to feasability! Nonetheless, if this was broadcast on major American news networks, these guys would be vilified as commies and traitors!

America paid no attention to the lessons of history

by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on

We have a saying in iran, there is no doh (two) that won't become a Seh  (three).   We had ww1 and ww2, and due to US philosophical errors we can now expect a ww3.  And the basis will be that we
did not learn from the causes  of the first 2  1)
imperialism/neocolonialism 2) militarization/bases 3) an extremist
element 4) alliances between powers.

Today based on the US policy for the middle east and North Africa the usa
made it 100% certain that we will have ww3, not if but when, as a result of doing the
exact same things that lead to 1 and 2.  It all started with what they
did to the shah.

Iranians can serve humanity by continuing to point out the mistakes of the usa, not just
carter but every president after him too.  That way it won't have been for
nothing.  The USA could have chosen peace/stability and friendship yet the
usa chose propaganda, colonialism, militarism and alliances showing no
wisdom at all.  I view the coup of 1979, not as Iranians made a mistake, but the usa made the
mistake to deceive iranians and betray the shah.  Even if to this day they choose to
not admit it.

The USA can arrogantly insist it was right, but they will pay the bigger price
for that mistake, imperialism doesn't work.  Watch and see. Kotakeshro az ooni keh behesh zolm kardi nemikhori, kotakeshro az digaran va zendegi mikhori.

Friendly fire

The U.S. military establishment is so bloated, so involved in unnecessary wars, so out of touch with today's realities... it's killing America.
