I’m not sure if this classifies as “dialogue” between the two countries, but lost in the news concerning Haleh Esfandiari and Parnaz Azim’s released is that it was done primarily through Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s orders. According to the LA Times, Khamenei was replying to a letter from Esfandiari’s boss, former Democratic Rep. Lee Hamilton, the co-chair of the Iraq Study Group, who wrote a “respectful letter asking for Esfandiari’s release and pledging to work for peace between the U.S. and Iran.”>>>

Israel, Iran and the U.S.

There are few Western cities where Persian pop music blasts at full volume in shopping malls. Yet this is a daily, natural occurrence at Jerusalem’s high-security downtown bus terminal. Here, in the equivalent of New York’s Penn Station, eighteen-year-old Israeli soldiers wait for their rides home, assault rifles slung over their shoulders, Persian pop legends Moin and Ebi pounding in their ears. Most of the CD stores here are owned by Iranian Jews, and over the past twenty years they have created a market for Persian pop in the very heart of the Jewish State.>>>

The forgotten cemetery

Our national shame

06-Sep-2007 (6 comments)
A loved one is buried in Karaj’s Beheshte Sakineh. This cemetery which has always been the burial grounds for Karaj and its surrounding villages, is now developing into a cemetery of choice for many Tehrani’s who would like to avoid Beheshte Zahra’s overbearing crowds and mayhem. In November 1998 on the first anniversary of our loved one’s passing, a small group of friends and family gathered at her gravesite to remember her. My sister had brought her good friend, Akram, with her. In mid-afternoon we gathered and performed the necessary rituals of the anniversary.>>>

The ballad of Howard Baskerville

"My mind is set, there is no going back"

05-Sep-2007

I sought him at the Karachi office of London Times and was directed to a raggedy, third class hotel near Prince’s market filled with beggars and found him still sleep in his cluttered little room – at 2 pm, unshaved and with a heavy breath of alcohol permeating him, looking considerably older than the photo attached to his foreign dispatches from Persia, India, and elsewhere . He offered a bit of his left over rum and I sipped it in a tea cup, wondering if that was the right moment to indulge him in his splendid Persian story.

Don't panic

Even Israel is ready to live with a nuclear Iran

Reports on an increased possibility of a US attack on Iran are raising some serious concerns. But I don't think it is anything but a psy-op, possibly this time by the liberals to frighten and provoke the Iranian government either to give up the enrichment or to do something stupid that could become a pretext for the more severe UN sanctions. There is absolutely nothing Bush could gain from such attack and this is not something that only the liberals are saying. >>>

Sandra Nunez writes: I have always been hesitant about putting my feelings in public.Kind of ironic, considering that I am a writer and I love to share my feelings with the entire world!! . But after reading so many love stories in this page, I decided I would give it a try and share, because it’s by sharing that I find joy. I made a promise to myself after reading Khaled Hoseeini’s novel,“A Thousand Splendid Suns”, that I would always follow my heart no matter how hard things on the way may turn, that I would never surrender and do what others want me to do,in other words,I promised myself to be a rebel-forever!>>>
