Sophie's choice? or Mission Impossible?

In the immediate aftermath of revolution, the word "Edam", execution, was the word of the day in our lives. As child, it made me shiver everyone time I heard from someone's mouth. At the beginning I didn't really know what it meant. But the grim nervous faces of people who murmured it, assured me that it is not a good thing. Shortly, I found out that it has to do to termination, annihilation of an individual. People were too busy and preoccupied to explain the concept of mortality to a child.

A public hanging in my childhood neighborhood!

On September 21, 2011, Golshahr Villa, a suburb of Karaj, 15,000 people gathered at the break of dawn to witness the hanging of a 17 year old boy, who killed the Rohollah Dadashi, supposedly the strongest man in Iran. The murder was committed during one of the street fights that take place thousands of time a day in Iran. In this instant, the kid was stupid enough to stab an over confident and possibly too arrogant to defend himself, Dadashi. The wound was too deep and Dadashi lost his life while the kid got fast tracked to the rope. I’m personally against capital punishment!

Epmty Chairs in the hall, Who's the emptiest of them all?

Once again the egocentric little man that is Ahmadi Nejad, unwittingly, made a universal dick out of himself.

Nowadays, Even the empty chairs of the general assembly are now sick of his antagonistic, hateful, vindictive, disgrace to the Persian language words.

Have you ever thought, that despite this much opposition, why he insists to repeat his worn out jibe every year? I have, the the following are the summary of my thoughts;

Stop being human beings!

At the first glance, it seems like a harmless innocent summer day youth activity! Splashing water from toy pistols at one another in the park! It happens everywhere in the world. What social activity could be as refreshing and natural as this?

Well, not in IRI, where it has been branded as anti social and no lesser than a threat to national security. Culprits were apprehended and taken to regime’s world famous dungeons, yet again! But then again, things don't have the same meaning as everywhere else in the world as they do in Iran these days!

IRI's TV offered little broadcasting of amusing nature to the children of my generation during the Iran-Iraq war. The little they offered however was directed at brain washing us to become model war and revolution kids. While, they were telling us that we should blow up ourselves in the cause of Islam as soon as we hit adolescence, they were also emphasizing that it is good that your fathers are in the front and you should behave proud and even encourage them if they haven’t joined the volunteers’’ militia already.

You've got to give it to the IRI think tanks. They have propaganda strategies that makes Goebbels and his Nazis look like a bloody rookie!

Their survival strategy which is a combination of brutal suppression and mass psyche manupolation has managed to keep them in power for the last 3 decades and if you ask me they are going to stick around for a while to come.

Culture Shock in L.A.

I have recently moved to LA and I'm facing culture shock. it's not due the ways of the American culture or the size of food portions or any other aspect of the American society. I've spent most of my life in western societies and have seen enough things that very little aspect of western culture surprises me.

My culture shock, incidentally, comes from seeing my fellow Iranians here and comparing them with their counterparts in Europe and Dubai (places that I have lived in).

Spare me the Pahlavi drama shows!

Ali Reza Pahlavi's suicide touched me on different grounds. I felt sorry for a man, an educated man, in his prime and wondered why he did it. What implications this has in Iranian lives, and why on earth the children of this family turned out to be like this. Depressed suicidal people. I also read the material people write about this and find it too much of a post mortem Iranian patronizing nonsense. glorifying the dead person and all. So here are my thoughts:

A leader much loved

I am sitting in front of BBC world News Channel Watching the Arrival of the Body of President of Poland to Warsaw who died tragically in yet another Tupolov Tu-154 air disaster.

I'm thinking many things. One of those thoughts is the so many times I boarded one those dodgy airplanes in my domestic work trips in Iran. Tu-154 is a terrible sight inside out. It's tough, ugly, and smells disaster. Seats are badly aligned, uncomfortable and the entire ride is very noisy, bumpy and fearful, even for a air nautical enthusiast like me.

Declaring Love

It’s the last day of our one week in London. I promised her a surprise. I want to take her to Greenwich, one of my favourite spots in London and I have a plan. I want to declare to her that I love her. I want to tell her that nothing makes me happier than spending the rest of my life with her and I want the perfect setting for that.

We take a ferry at Tower of London pier to Greenwich. It’s a bit chilly today and the clouds suggest rain. The met office suggested otherwise and no showers for the day, but you can never trust those buggers. They always get it wrong.
