Feeling Like an Outsider in SF: June 20, 2009

As I attended the demonstration at United Nations Plaza in San Francisco earlier this evening, accompanied by two dear friends; I couldn’t help but feel a little awkward. I am pained by the images and stories coming out of Iran, the videos of young men and women bleeding out in the streets, the Iranian forces mercilessly beating women and children. But, I couldn’t help but stand in that crowd and feel like I didn’t belong. I wanted to bounce two thoughts off of you all to see what you think.

Tonight will surely be a sleepless night as I listen to Dariush on youtube and follow Twitter, helplessly occupying my racing mind by reading messages of support from across the world to the people of Iran. My boss asked me today about basijis and whether they were always as bad as they now are being portrayed as being. I told him the last time I had been to Iran was 2001 and that my sole memory of a basiji was as follows:

Imagine my surprise this morning when I saw Ahmadinejad aka Vote Converter 2009 up for auction on eBAY. 9 more days 'til auction's end and he's already hit a half a million bucks. Check it out... I'm considering whether or not to bid; my list of things to do with him is running short. Any ideas?

A nation had lost all hope and was ready to throw in the towel when it came to their World Cup aspirations, and he chose this day to remind us all that Team Melli is worth fighting for, that his jersey and place in that team was worth fighting for. A slap in Ali Daei's face for sure as he dribbled three Arabs and netted the goal. He is truly Iran's Iranian of the Day today. Thank you Ali Karimi for helping keep the dream alive just a little longer!
