I had the good fortune of interviewing Iranian director and actor Parviz Sayyad in Berkeley a while ago. As I sat down to prepare the long overdue photo essay of our talk this weekend, I realized that there is so much that needs to be said and shared about Parviz Sayyad's work that couldn't possibly fit on top of 30 photographs. To try and summarize his lifelong accomplishments would simply not do justice to the man. In that vein, I will write a couple of blogs to highlight what I think is important to show you about Parviz Sayyad's many contributions to us.

در دنیایی که من در آن بزرگ میشدم، "آوازه خوان" پرشهامت ترین آدمی بود که دیده بودم. مرد بود، اما میرقصید. تحصیل کرده بود، اما آواز میخواند. مثل این بود که گرفتار "رودربایستی" و عذابهای اجتماعی سایر ایرانی ها نبود. هرچی دلش میخواست، به هرکی دلش میخواست میگفت، بعدش میخندید. بلند میخندید و طولانی.

And so, another old year ends and a New Day begins.

This year’s Nowruz spread came together a little differently than last year’s.

I realized that the prayer and the hope that heralds the upcoming seasonal and annual change had formed in my head a long time before getting the components of the spread together.

It is as though I have been saying these things to myself now for months.

"Keys To My Home," a Luna Shad documentary

Luna Shad's first documentary, Keys To My Home, will be screened at University of California at Berkeley this coming Saturday, February 11, 2012. The film is about one Iranian Journalist, Delbar Tavakoli, who fled Iran in the aftermath of the disputed 2009 elections. Delbar's is only one of at least 150 stories of Iranian journalists who have had to flee persecution and abuse in Iran since June 2009, according to Committee to Protect Journalists.

I had the pleasure of meeting Iranian painter, cartoonist, and filmmaker Emad Shadzi in San Francisco a couple of years ago. There was something playful and full of light about him and his paintings. I showed pictures of some of his works to Jahanshah and he featured them on Iranian.com.

I would like to share this music video which remembers Iran's political prisoners, and those Iranians who were persecuted for their beliefs in 1389. This song, "Bahar-e ghamangiz," is based on a poem by Houshang Ebtehaj (Sayeh). My friend, Parisa Vaaleh, wrote the music and performed the vocals. Kamran Thunder has arranged and performed the music. I hope you enjoy her beautiful music and remember Iran's prisoners on this first day of spring, too.

Farewell Hannibal Alkhas

I went to a memorial service for Iranian (Assyrian) artist, Hannibal Alkhas last evening. I listened to his son, Buna, and his daughter talk about their father, among a dozen other students, friends, and admirers of Hannibal Alkhas. Buna's speech particularly moved me. He spoke about his father in the same style as he does his writing and drawing--simply, honestly, and poetically. I really wanted to spend more time with Buna and his handsome son, but time was short as he will be returning home tomorrow.
