Thirty one years after the Islamic Revolution, two forces inside Iran come face to face tomorrow, February 11, 2010. The Iranian regime, which has increasingly been the sole celebrator of 22 Bahman, is trying with all its might to show this day and its related "celebrations" as evidence of its legitimacy and Iranian people's commitment to the Islamic Republic of Iran, despite appearances. Iranian protesters who have been denied legal permits for their gatherings to object to elections fraud and subsequent violence on protesters, are planning to take over this public gathering, much as they have every other government supported occasion since June, 2009.
By all accounts, the government has done its best to enlist and summon its supporters to its Tehran gathering, using intimidation and threats to keep the protesters at home, bringing internet services to a hault, lining main streets with loudspeakers to drone out voices of the protesters, switching plastic garbage dumpsters (flammable ones) with metal ones to keep the protesters from using them as barricades, and closing in Azadi Square for more effective crowd control, among other things.
For their part, the protesters have said in Tweets and blogs that they would not be deterred. They are planning to show up and to be heard again.
The sad murders of Iranians on Tehran streets whenever there has been a large protest over the past seven months has been no small matter. Nobody looks forward to more violence and it is everyone's sincere hope that no other Iranian dies during the protests or after. We cannot stop the violence Islamic Republic of Iran is able and willing to unleash on the unarmed Iranian protesters. All we can do is to share what information we get about the events with others. Let us not be indifferent. Let us make the voices of those defenseless people on Tehran streets heard by the rest of the world.
If you see Tweets, blogs, news items, video clips, or anything else which could be of interest to others in our community, please feel free to post it here over the coming hours. I will do the same. This blog will be a live news blog.
I wish Iranians worldwide peace and freedom. I wish every one of those people to go back to their families safe and sound tomorrow.

Alirezag12: Friends don't let friends be IRI groupies
by AMIR1973 on Thu Feb 11, 2010 07:26 AM PSTWhy do IRI groupies on this website choose to live in the belly of Sheytan-e Bozorg rather than settling down to a nice life in the People's Democratic Islamic Republic of Iran? IRI's groupies in the west have voted with their feet, and their feet carried them very far away from that disaster scene known as IRI. Their love affair with IRI is mostly conducted from a very far distance in North America, Europe, etc. The IRI is a beacon of economic opportunity, justice, prosperity, technological advancement. freedom, meritocracy, democracy, and human rights. Oh yeah, IRI has done a great job running Iran, with its GDP lower than Gabon and Botswana and a world innovator in executing teenage criminals, flogging, raping prisoners, and hanging people from cranes, imprisoning bloggers, and journalists.
Now, please defend the IRI. I love to hear enthusiasts of stoning people to death enlighten me with their views.

by divaneh on Thu Feb 11, 2010 07:23 AM PSTIf you view the many comments posted by this user, you would realize that he is obviously spamming the blog with repeated comments that have nothing to do with the nature of this live news blog. I have now also flagged him as abusive for the insensitivity shown to the news of people's death and would like to see him banned from IC altogether.

Alirezag12: IRI groupie extraordinaire
by AMIR1973 on Thu Feb 11, 2010 07:03 AM PSTI have always been impressed at the huge level of support for the North Korean regime and Saddam's Baathist government. Have you seen the size of offcial rallies in those countries? And those regimes have no general strikes or opposition rallies, and their citizens continuously affirm support for their leaders in elections. BTW, have you read Orwell's 1984?

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Thu Feb 11, 2010 06:38 AM PSTI agree with Hovakhshatare in this case. This particular news item is intended for news about 22 Bahman 2010. It is not a discussion blog nor is it a chat room. If people such as Alireza want to have a debate they can move it to a blog on this site.
This is not censorship because no one is banned. It is just keeping the news focused. Move the discussion and unrelated news to a different page please!

Protests without police supervision
by alirezag12 on Thu Feb 11, 2010 06:38 AM PST"IRI should let those who don't want this system to have a day of protest without its Security Forces and basijis blocking them."
Why don't you let people protest outside your house without police supervision?
Response to David ET
by alirezag12 on Thu Feb 11, 2010 06:34 AM PSTIf opposition "does not have the numbers":
Why are streets filled with guns and crowd control amenitions and forces? Same reason US cities are filled with cops. A criminal only needs to succeed once, the police need to succeed always, everywhere.
Why is IR not giving demonstration permit to the ones who "do not have the numbers"?!!!! Because riots, looting & fires are illegal.
Why is internet down or slowed? It's not. I've had no problems communicating with people. How did you get these pathetic videos of a few dozen people chanting if the internet is down?
Why are opposition papers shut down? Because they incite violence. Try inciting riots in the US and see what happens. For more, see "can't yell fire in a crowded movie theater" supreme court opinion.
Why are SMS down? They're not.
Why are they even afraid of Gmail?!!! and Google? See above.
IR has Media, Assets of the nation, Guns and everything in CONTROL but still afraid of what then? The ones who "do not have the numbers"? !!!! They're afraid of criminals. Decent society always has the numbers, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be vigilant against criminals. How would you like it if people set your car on fire? You wouldn't like that at all, but you like to do it to other people's property.
In Shiraz, more than 20,000 people have gathered on Paramount
by Hovakhshatare on Thu Feb 11, 2010 06:32 AM PSTStreet towards Saedi Cinema Street to protest against the regime with the chants of “death to dictator,” “death to Khamenei,” “death to the principle of velayat-e faqih (absolute clerical rule),” and “death to evil.” The special anti-riot forces have blocked off both ends of the street and fired tear gas into the crowd. Clashes have spread to other parts of the city.
In Isfahan, there have been shots fired against protestors at Azar Bridge towards the Bridge of Thirty Three Arches.
In Ahvaz, people have begun marching from Salman Farsi Street towards Abadan intersection. At Taleqani Street, people chant, “death to dictator,” and “death to the principle of velayat-e faqih.” Anti-riot forces have sealed off the so-called Behbahani Boulevard in the city.
In the southwestern city of Gachsaran, more than 2,000 people have started their protests.
To get a clear picture...
by ahvazi on Thu Feb 11, 2010 06:31 AM PSTIRI should let those who don't want this system to have a day of protest without its Security Forces and basijis blocking them. If on that day 5,000 (number according to IRI supporters) people show up then we can judge that the Iranian nation wants IRI, and if not then IRI and its supporters should see the writing on the wall!!!
The fact that with all those security forces present , 5,000 people show up it show the courage of the people. They are beaten, imprisoned, raped and kill and they still come out.

by alirezag12 on Thu Feb 11, 2010 06:04 AM PSTGive it up already. Your "movement" is rapidly becoming a joke. I'll repeat:
1. You didn't have the numbers to win at the ballot box.
2. You didn't have the numbers to win on the streets.
3. You didn't have the numbers to mount general strikes.
4. Now you can't even get a decent sized crowd for your pathetic youtube videos. At least get a good 5,000 person mob out there before you hit the record.
This is pathetic. Daree khodetoonoh maskhareh meekoneen.
alirezag12 (or whoever's other ID you are)
by Shepesh on Thu Feb 11, 2010 06:01 AM PSTyour review is flawed and wishful thinking.
Welcome to IC, I see you have only been here on this site 27 minutes.
The Islamic revolution has strayed from its ideals. The rulers in Tehran try to intimidate a discontent society by way of threats, arrests and even executions. Iran has a young society which demands to be heard, and the issue is no longer the disputed presidential elections; the issue is far more the present clash of illusion and reality. The so-called "green movement" represents the struggle of young Iranians against the illusions of their fathers.
There will always be people in Iran and supporters of Iranians outside Iran, who will work towards democracy, civil rights and human dignity for Iranians. So your little wimper here shows your own desperation to keep the status quo. Iranians will keep on going until they get their dignity. Civil Rights Movements take time but they will succeed, history has shown that. The countdown for the upheaval of an unbearable reality has now begun.
