To the 80 Million Iranians living in Iran, January 1st is simply known as “yazdeye Dey” or the 11th day of Dey. However to the millions of Iranians who are part of the Diaspora living outside of Iran in the western hemisphere it is technically New Years whether we want it to be or not. Unlike Norooz, which has a great many festivities associated with it, New Years is just that down time from our businesses and the off time from our jobs.

CBS refused to air this segment on television stating that there was “no place for that music on a true music program.” Today Hip Hop/Rap can be seen everywhere from Compton to Sesame Street. Born 30+ years ago in the mean streets of New York, today Hip Hop or Rap can be found on every street corner of every city in the world.

With the death of Neda in the recent Green Movement in Iran, more and more focus has been given to Iranian women. Women’s rights and the Women’s movement have been highlighted several times on the news from CNN to FOX. The most ironic part was the American audiences surprise on how beautiful the women protestors in Iran were. Several shows were actually dedicated to the plight of the Iranian women and how the “beautiful protesters” overshadowed their struggle.

When I hear the words Mehregan I think Orange Countyfestival, well that and Transformers. Mehregan sounds like a bad guy that would fight Optimus Prime. Like many Per Gens (the generation ofPersians born in the diaspora outside of Iran) I am receiving much of myPersian culture and heritage second hand. My parents have always tried to instill Persian values and insist onPersian customs however being that my father is my only primary source ofIranian knowledge it is like playing the game “telephone” with Iranianhistory.

Ever wonder how lucrative a bookstore can be? I often do. When I visit Westwood and see the numerous bookstores that line the two blocks leading to UCLA. Nicknamed “Little Iran”, Westwood is smaller than we think. However despite its small size the amount of competing similar businesses is uncanny.

The question becomes…why can’t Iranians just get along?
