DRAFT IRANIAN LAW THREATENS GROSS HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS

NEW YORK, 22 February 2008 (BWNS) -- The Iranian Parliament is considering
legislation that would institutionalize a series of gross human rights
violations, affecting many even outside of Iran.
Of greatest concern is a section that would mandate the death penalty for anyone
who converts from Islam to another religion, a provision that would affect not
only Baha'is but also Christians, Jews, and others.
The proposed law also would extend the government's reach over alleged security
violations outside the country, give legal effect to discriminatory practices
already in wide use, and redefine a series of
"religious" and other crimes so vaguely as to place in jeopardy virtually any
group facing government disapproval.

"If adopted, the code will permit the government and the clergy to act with
impunity against Iran's citizens on the sole basis of their religious
affiliation,". "This is not only an affront to the people of
Iran; it is an offense to all who seek to uphold fundamental human rights."

The new section on religious conversion -- defined as apostasy --
is especially severe, in that its language mandates the death penalty for anyone
who converts from Islam to another religion and does not immediately recant.

"The text uses the word Hadd, meaning that it explicitly sets death as a fixed
punishment that cannot be changed, reduced or annulled,". "In the
past, the death penalty has been handed down -- and also carried out -- in
apostasy cases, but it has never before been set down in law.

"The law also extends to naming as apostate any follower of a religion other
than Islam who had ONE PARENT who was a Muslim at the time of his or her
conception. Thus, for instance, the CHILD of a Muslim and a Christian who
chooses to adopt the Christian faith would be considered an apostate under the
terms of the law and therefore subject to EXECUTION,".

Another troubling section of the proposed code would extend "security" laws
OUTSIDE OF THE COUNTRY, exposing those outside Iran to the government's reach.

"Iran is apparently not content with targeting those it considers its opponents
only within its borders," THE Article 112 of the
proposed code refers to actions "against the government, the independence and
the internal and external security of the country."

"Since the notion of 'security' is not defined in the law, any action can be
qualified as such,".

The code's vagueness with respect to "offending the sacred" and other crimes
would give the government free license to act against any group it disapproves
of. "The code includes articles that refer to the commission of
unspecified crimes or felonies, as well as articles referring to those guilty of
'corruption and mischief on the earth,'" she said.

He has written two books about his life which have inspired people. No significant legislative accomplishments. He is married, 2 children.

MANAGEMENT PHILOSOPHY: Insists he is not a Chief Operating Officer. Instead, he believes his role is to set the direction for the country, and hire other people (as yet unidentified) to actually run the government. Yet, the evidence to date from the campaign trail suggests he does not hold subordinates accountable for their actions (i.e. South Carolina campaign staff, Jessie Jackson Jr., General Mc Peak, Axelrod, etc.)

MANAGEMENT STYLE: In public, he favors huge meetings, inspirational speeches, and mass movement politics tilted toward young people and the media. But, behind the scenes he is the exact opposite, i.e. very deferential to powerful interests, and willing to concede a publicly held position as long as he can get a positive headline. Sometimes he gets political contributions too, i.e. Exelon. Uses consultants and lobbyists to steer his campaign and spread false stories about opponents. Plays the race card– offensively and defensively, with plausible deniability.

POLITICAL MESSAGE: Decries the old politics, i.e. clash of interests, baby boomer conflicts, lobbyist control, and claims to offer a new kind of politics, i.e. transcendence, common purpose, rule by the people. But this is an utterly utopian construct. You cannot govern without politics. Our country is too complicated for that. This approach has been tried before by people like Adlai Stevenson, Bill Bradley, Deval Patrick. It leads to political gridlock and nothing gets done.

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE: He is a narcissistic personality. He preaches themes of empowerment and unity. But when challenged, he becomes very defensive, pouts and tends to demonize opponents, i.e. Wal Mart charge. And when he does not get his way threatens to pick up his marbles and go home, i.e. the veiled threat that he may not support the nominee if it is not him. Finally, his attitude toward women is suspect, i.e. the snub, likeable enough, turning his back, not feeling well, etc.

JUDGMENT: He claims that he is always right on day 1. He cites a speech in Illinois legislature opposing Iraq War as proof–but concedes that he does not know what he would have voted if he had been in the Senate at the time. He dismisses his 17 year political and financial entanglement with an indicted political fixer as a “bone headed mistake”. He leaves hard decisions to others and critiques them later.

MORAL COURAGE: He failed to show up for Kyle Lieberman, but criticized the votes of others who did. He voted “pass” 129 times on various pieces of legislation, on controversial issues. Says he pushed the wrong button six times. When he lost the Nevada primary, he left town without thanking supporters, delivering a concession speech and congratulating his opponent per customary practice. This has caused some to say that he is never there when you need him.

They're all bad candidates.

They're all bad candidates. True change would only come from Mike Gravel or more importantly from Ron Paul, but people are not ready to see that. They think changing the color of the skin of the president or their gender is the change needed to progress into the future. With all the problems America faces (mainly due to its disastrous foreign policy) neither McCain, Hillary, or Obama will bring about change. Just because Obama is young, black, and a "good" vocal orator, doesn't mean he's the right candidate for change. After Bush, anyone looks good, I'll give you that, but real change won't sprout from these candidates. If you really cared, you wouldn't be swayed by their presence and speaking prowess on Tv, but you would do some research on their issues, and sooner than later you would find out how inadequate and disastrous they could be for the America.

Did you know that Hilary and Obama aren't the only democratic candidates running...there's also Mike Gravel, but you never hear anything from this man on Tv, because the media lion doesn't want you to hear what he has to say.

The same with the Republican party. It's only McCain and Huckabee left in the GOP race for presidential primaries, but Ron Paul as well. Fox has banned him, and most media outlets refuse to give him air time. His stances are the best out of anyones, and he is the only candidate to be consistently making money for his campaign every quarter rather than being in debt...like McCain, or accepting money from lobbyist like Hilary.
