I have been a vegan almost all of my adult life. One can get all the nutrients in meat from vegetarian sources. There are hundreds of millions of people on this planet (in India alone) who are vegetarians. And on average, they are much healthier, and have a longer life expectancy, than carnivores.
One just has to make certain that s/he gets enough protein on a vegetarian diet. But that's an easy thing to do. One can eat nuts, and there are a lot of soy substitute products, with ample protein. And one can also eat dairy (like I do on occasion). In my case, though, I only buy it from local farms where I know that animals are not subjected to factory level milking, etc.
a discussion, but didn't think it would about the merits of using animals as a food source. I did get pretty close to this thing when I took the shot and must say that it was pretty darn fresh!
This thing was just hanging there in front of the butcher shop.
but how else can we capture the nutrients extracted from meat? I don't think that there is any artificial subsitute. if human beings truly avoided consuming animals then how would we survive? aren't plants animals too? or is it ok to eat plants because they aren't cute and cuddly?
In South Korea they sometimes hang a dog and beat it to increase adrenalin so the meat will taste better. I will not visit these countries including China due to lack of Animal Rights, and usually cruelty to the people too. They usually go hand in hand.
And in certain cultures and religions, such as Judaism and Islam, it's institutionalized, which is even more disgusting.
Although, I have to say that compassion for animals doesn't always translate to compassion for human beings. After all, uncle Adolf was a vegan and a huge animal lover!
That sounds awful! My friend from Malaysia told me about a similar experience in her country. You are absolutely right: If you show no compassion to animals then how on earth can you show mercy to your own kind?
I once on a trip to a certain far eastern country witnessed the gory ceremonial consumption of a live (well, loosley speaking..) monkey's brain as a special treat for a special guest. On that particular restaurant's menue, you'd find delicacies made of anything which ran, swam, crawled or flied.
BTW the country in question is not an islamist state by any stretch of imagination. Some believe, that the way animals are treated in any society is an indication of how people of that society treat each other.

I'd rather use the animal for hard work, for a change. Carrying people, plaughing fields (can shotors do that?), or something useful for society instead of murmuring islamist propaganda on internet!

by Simorgh5555 on Tue Apr 26, 2011 02:48 PM PDTI agree. I abhore Kosher/Halal slaughter for the inhumane way they kill the animal.
How people treat animals is a sign of feelings for people

Barbaric!
by Anonymous Observer on Tue Apr 26, 2011 11:05 AM PDTThis is why I'm a vegan. This just shows the ugly side of the steak (and kabob) on your dinner plate.
