Iranian cities are often desert cities drawing water from the snow melt of nearby mountains in open or underground channels. Everything that grows in these cities needs to be irrigated: crops, orchards, gardens, parks and street trees. Since ancient times, this is achieved by gravity-based systems with manual opening and closure of sluice gates.
