Washington, 2 September (WashingtonTV)—Iran on Wednesday rejected claims by a former Iraqi official that Tehran had a role in the recent deadly bombings in Baghdad and was interfering in Iraq’s domestic affairs.

“Iran condemns all acts of terrorism in Iraq and rejects the baseless allegations of Gen. Mohammed Shahwani, the former head of Iraqi intelligence, and his aide, who asserted that Iran had a role in such cruel acts and was intervening in internal Iraqi affairs,” said Mohammad Ali Mohammadi, press secretary of Iran’s mission to the United Nations.

In an interview last week with the Washington Post, Shahwani said that forensic evidence pointed to a possible Iranian role in the 19 August truck bombings targeting the ministries of finance and foreign affairs in Baghdad, which killed 95 people.

Shahwani resigned last month due to what he viewed as Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s attempts to undermine his service and allow Iranian spies to operate freely in Iraq, according to the Washington Post.

Mohammadi said it was “unfortunate” that the daily adopted Shahwani’s “absurd anti-Iran allegations”.

“Contrary to these groundless allegations, Iran fully respects Iraq’s sovereignty, strictly adheres to the principle of non-interference in Iraq’s internal affairs and wishes for a stable and prosperous Iraq,” Mohammadi said in his statement, published by the Washington Post.
