I recently published a book, Goodbye Iran which is the true story of two young men, Hossein and Hamid, and a young woman, Afsaneh, who in 1983 decide to escape from the repressive and institutionalized land of their birth in search of a better life. The book follows them on their real-life journey, full of difficult decisions, intense joys, and bitter disappointments as they set sail to say goodbye to Iran forever.

Why Do We Believe?

Recent public opinion polls show that an overwhelming majority of Americans still believe in God and a universal spirit, almost nine out of ten people according to the latest Gallop poll published in 2011. The same polls show that a great percentage of people surveyed also believed in miracles, heaven, afterlife, hell, and the devil. Although these percentages have diminished since 1994, the numbers are perplexing in the wake of modern scientific discoveries.

Ever since I was a child, I've been comparing any rose I saw to the ones from Iran. I would climb fences, cross roads, come to a screeching halt just to get out of my car and smell a rose sticking out from someone's garden or growing wild on the road side, thinking to myself, maybe this one will smell like the one at home? I would even gage the air and whether it had just rained or possibly if the flower was under enough sun to have released some aroma. My grandmother's roses were spectacular.
