I visited him in 2005 at his home in northern Tehran, facing the Alborz Mountains. He is the longest held prisoner of Iran, sometimes referred to as the Iranian Mandela.

He was on a leave of absence, which is part of a prison furlough system in Iran. His name, Abbas Amirentezam, should be familiar to anyone who knows the history of the U.S. Embassy take-over in 1980 and the plight of the American hostages held for 444 days. He is not referred to in the film Argo.

First of all I would like to thank all the responders for their valuable comments. I sure hope my article was as informative to them as their comments were to me. I found it most interesting that the tone and content of most of the comments actually and inadvertently confirm parts of the argument in my article. That, building infrastructure does not necessarily lead to modernity in thought and behavior. Otherwise, Saudi Arabia would be considered amongst the most modern countries in the world and we all know how modern they are.

I had always read and heard great things about this individual and I became curious to know why he was considered to be so great. So I decided to study his life in detail. I will assume that the reader has some basic knowledge of contemporary Iranian history and is familiar with the personality of Reza Shah. In any case, here is my opinion.
