These photographs are from the recent Tehran staging
of Art, a critically-acclaimed play by Yasima Reza.
Introduction from a website dedicated to this play:
Art has made its name in many parts of the globe. This production
alone has already been performed in Chicago, New York, Sydney, Los Angeles
and Buenos Aires and is currently touring the USA.
The play was first produced in Paris, at the Comédie des Champs
Elysées, in 1994. There, Sean Connery saw it, on his wife's advice,
and liked it so much that he decided to back an English-language production.
He and co-producer David Pugh asked the renowned playwright Christopher
Hampton to translate the script.
The production opened at Wyndham's Theatre in 1996. It was a huge success
and won its playwright, Yasima Reza, an Olivier award and an Evening
Standard award for Best Comedy. A couple of years later, the production
opened in New York. In London, the production is now in to its 15th cast.
English language productions of the play have been seen in Poland, Iarael,
India, South Africa, Bermuda, Portugal, Singapore and even Paris, as well
as the places already mentioned. With such success, Art - hailed
on its arrival as a play for the '90s - now looks set to be the play for
the millennium.
