Knowing about War
By Parinaz Eleish
I gather all my things.
How the calm shadows of old cypresses in the yard
no longer arrest my glance,
no longer hold my step captive in their cool assurance.
The fold of the curtains
and their years of loyalty fail me.
I see through their finely woven schemes,
a boy running down the alley
without a shoe.
A donkey abandons his load of tomatoes
in the desolate square,
his eyes crazed with fear
he circles the half-empty pool.
There is war outside.
I gather all my things
and sit waiting.
