* Hero of democracy
My choice would have been Abdollah Nouri but with the assassination attempt on
Mr Hajjarian I think he is not only the Iranian of the year for 1999 but he will
remain in hte memory of the Iranian nation as one of the greatest heros in the history
of the Iranian people's fight for freedom and democracy.

* Effective challenge
The assassins knew exactly who is the most effective player among reformers. I
am sorry that I did not know Mr Hajjarian before this. After I read a couple of his
articles inIranian newspapers, it became clear to me why they targeted him.
I choose him as Iranian of the year because of his courage to challange the main
power circle when nobody else dares to attack this corrupt power grid as vividly
and effectively as he has. The fact that such a thoughtful strategist was not very
well-known before, proves that he is not after name and fame, but he is a true believer
of our revolution before it has been hijacked by power-thirsty politicians.
May God save him for the nation and reveal the real face of those who abuse power
for their own sake in the name of Islam and other sacred symbols of our nation.

Although Hajjarian knew that he could be assasinated at anytime. He also knew
that all he had to do to prevent any danger to his life is to leave the hardliners
alone, or join them.
But he did not sell his people out and he did not even accept a bodyguard. He
wanted to be equal to the people. This man has something that not everyone has and
that is gheyrat and sharaf and mardanegi and eshgh'e be keshvar
va mardom va eslam.
Also I have to say people like Mr Ganji, and Nouri, etc., are just as good as
Mr Hajjarian but Hajjarian was the one who took the bullet. So I choose him as the
my Iranian of the year.
