 Not worth itMoin could have gained another fan, but... By Sheila Dadvar July 5, 2002 The Iranian Living in Kansas City where there are so few Iranians you don't even bother calling it a community, we try to attend shows and gatherings as much as we can. Since moving to America six years ago, I have seen maybe seven concerts. One of them was Moein's in fall of '99. Why bring that up now after almost three years? It took me a long time to gather my courage to write. But I had to get off my chest. I have never been a fan of Moein's, but my cousin's family were visiting from Sweden and I was trying to be a good host. Talking to some friends of mine, I knew I was going to be one of the few who did not think much of his singing (again my apologies to his die-hard fans). The concert was going to start at 8:30. We got there at 7:30 and the doors were closed, but you could hear Moein's voice practicing before the show, while about 200 people were standing in line, waiting. I was thinking, that's wonderful. Almost everyone is here on time. When we go inside, the show is going to start right away. Well, not exactly. When they opened the doors around 8:30, our beloved singer was not there. I thought, hey give him a break. The guy wants a grand entrance. We sat and waited for the "big moment". My husband Afshin looked at his watch. It was a quarter to nine. Another hour passed and there was no sign of Moin. You could see people getting frustrated. We were joking about how we would have been better off chatting at home, if that's what we were supposed to do -- without the hassle of uncomfortable dresses and high heels. I started getting worried about our kids who were at our sitter's. I had told her that the concert would be over around 11:30. And now the watch was getting closer to 10. Is he ever going to show up and if so how long is he going to be on stage? I was starting to doubt that he would. At 10:15 Moein came on stage and started singing without any apology for being so late. But I thought, hell, let's make the best of it. The big surprise came at the end of the show at around (he sang for an hour and half), when he gave his grand speech. I could not believe my ears. He was saying, right in our face, "Well you know, I was on my way to Chicago. Kansas is a small town and not really worth doing a concert. But I had to stop by anyway." My jaws were wide open. Was I hearing right? How arrogant can one be? Has he forgotten that these people made him who he is? Whatever happened to "derakht har cheh por baar tar, sar kham tar"? We have gone to other concerts here. The mother of all was Googoosh's. She came on stage right on time, sang her best for four hours, cried and cried and thanked us as if we have done her the biggest favor in her whole life. Now that's a tree bearing the heavy weight of loyalty and gratitude. Moin is going to care about what I have to say as much as he cared for the audience on that fall night. But I want to let him know that he could have gained another fan. Instead he saw lots of folks signing out of his fan club.
