Sadi Carnot best known as the father of thermodynamics was the
eldest son of Lazare Carnot and he was born in the Palais du Petit-Luxembourg.
At the time of Sadi's birth, his father was a member of the Directory,
the French Revolutionary government which lasted four years from November
1795 to November 1799. Sadi was given named after the medieval Persian
poet and philosopher called Sa'di of Shiraz. In 1824 Carnot published
this work, the only one he published during his lifetime, Réflexions
sur la puissance motrice du feu et sur les machines propres à développer
cette puissance which includes his description of the "Carnot cycle".
The Réflexions was an attempt by Carnot to answer two fundamental
questions, firstly whether there was a upper limit to the power of heat,
and secondly whether there was a better means than steam to produce this
power.
