Two Iranian women practice playing the daf, a traditional Iranian drum,
before performing at Iran's first women's music festival, in Tehran August
28, 2001. The week long festival, which began August 26, aims to provide
women an opportunity to show their musical talent and encourage young talent.
Public music performances by women were banned after the 1979 Islamic revolution,
but with the easing of cultural restrictions after the election of President
Mohammad Khatami in 1997, the performances have flourished.
