A family prays at the Zoroastrian temple in Chakchak, the site of an
annual pilgrimage Saturday, June 16, 2001 some 80 kilometers (50 miles)
south of Yazd in southern Iran. Zoroastrianism is an ancient monotheistic
religion based on the teachings of Zarathushtra (Zoroaster), who lived in
Iran over 2,500 years ago. Every year for five days, thousands of worshippers
come to Chakchak to pray in the temple built in the mountain, were a holy
tree has been surviving in the deserted site for thousands of years.
