Ahmad Rafat, the new General Secretary on Foreign
Press Association of Italy. It has 570 members, from 56 nations, representing more
than 600 international media. This is the first time in its 90 year old story that
an Iranian has been elected as the General Secretary. Rafat, 50, is chief correspondent
for Italy and the Middle East for the most influential Spanish weekly TIEMPO and
correspondent for Persian language services of Radio Free Europe-Radio Liberty. Based
in Rome since 1970, he has worked in the past for major European dailies and magazines.
Married to Silvia, and a father (son Nima is 29 and Leonardo 21), Rafat has covered
developments from the Middle East to the Balkans, and awarded several prizes for
his journalistic work.
