The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL) attracts
scientists from all over the world. Farideh Jalilehvand, who served as a Research
Associate at SSRL from 2000-2002, is an outstanding young scientist who came to the
facility via Tehran, Tokyo, and Stockholm. Her XANES work on wood core analysis for
the warship Vasa broke new ground in the use of XANES and in understanding aspects
of marine archeology (see the Office of Science article). She is now Assistant Professor
in Physical/Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
