Leftists
After the revolution, radical leftist groups (Marxist-Lennists, Stalinists,
Maoists...) were the first to be denied civic rights. Their newspapers were shut
and offices closed down. So, they took to the sidewalks. On this particular spot
on Vali Asr (Pahlavi) Ave., near Motahari (Takht-e Tavous) in Tehran, young men and
women sold banned books and newspapers of a radical leftist group known as Rah-e
Kargar (Workers's Path), if I'm not mistaken. They also engaged in debates with curious
passersby. Every day as I walked to work, I would take a look at their latest offerings
and listen to the debates. I took this picture less than a block away from my office
at the Islamic Republic News Agency, where I was a translator for the English section
(mid-1981).
