Long history
Gonbad-e Kavus in Mazandaran Province: Site of a huge brick tomb
tower constructed by a local prince, Qabus ibn Vashmgir (Amir Shams
al-Ma'ali), in 1006. At around 60 metres tall, it can be seen from
a great distance. When he died, it is said that his body was suspended
from the top of the tower shaft in a glass coffin. No coffin has
ever been found, but the outer wall bears the inscription, "In
the name of God the Merciful, the Compassionate. This is the lofty
palace of the Amir Shams al-Ma'ali, the Amir, son of the Amir Qabus,
son of Vashmgir.
