Punch
What is the origin of the word "punch"?
Sepaass Shahidi wrote:
Because I am Iranian, I would argue that the word punch came from
the word "panj," meaning five or from the hindu word "panch," with
the same meaning. Because the drink was commonly made with five
types of ingredients.
Quiz suggested by Viviane
Barzel:
"Punch derives from Parsi and Sanskrit PANJ, as containing 5 elements,
this drink was the alcoholic adaptation of British and Portuguese
sailors."
