* How can I not?
When I saw Saman's
latest cartoon in my email box, my first reaction was, there's no way
I'm going to publish this. But as I write to you, I'm thinking,
how can I not?
The fact is that I think the National
Iranian American Council (NIAC) does good work. And I think its president, Trita Parsi,
cares about the community. He has built an organization that is
working hard to raise awareness about the issues facing Iranian-Americans.
It has also done a great job to encourage people to donate money
for
earthquake victims in Bam.
So, it came as a shock that
Saman sees it quite differently.
I have refused to publish articles, letters, photos, cartoons,
art... but never because I disagreed with the writer or artist.
(Actually, I did refuse to publish something my morther wrote about
my father. But I won't get into to that now.)
Am I making a big deal out of a simple cartoon? Probably.
But in my professional world, it's really important to be fair
and encourage free speech. It's the kind of stuff
I deal with on a regular basis. Publish or not
to
publish?
The
answer
is publish, almost always.
