The Iranian

Many of us have memories of Iran still trapped like wounded animals in our heads. I find myself frequently looking back on my childhood in the 70's and sense the bittersweet pleasure-pain of a love lost. This five-part "short" is neither completely fictional nor exactly true. The names are inaccurate and the locales are based on my increasingly failing memory of Tehran in the old days. It is a story. Nothing more. Nothing less. Take from it what you want ... Dibachi's latest project

By Kourosh Karimkhany

Keeping an inventory of physical assets -- things like blueprints and schematics -- is a piece of cake. Keeping track of intellectual assets... is not.

That's where Farzad Dibachi comes in. The Iranian immigrant on Monday unveiled his second startup, Niku, a company that will attempt to keep track of knowledge stored in employees' heads.

Its flagship product is a sophisticated project-management program that stores each employee's résumé, skills, work history, performance ratings, and availability. A quick database search with Niku software will reveal which individuals working in a team would be best prepared to install, say, an email system, or design a new jumbo jet, or handle the privatization of a Latin American phone company ... UNICEF: Women & children

I work for UNICEF in Tehran. I would like to attract attention to our center which is called the Knowledge Center. The center is devoted to research on Iranian women and children, different aspects of their lives and legal and social problems. We are seeking volunteer help specially to gather information and look into possibilities for women in Iran to do some sort of income-generating activities. We are trying to network between Iranian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and governmental organizations and to gather useful information about them. If you can think of any possibilities that may be helpful to us please let us know.

Thank you,

Farideh Taherifar

Ancient Persia
From 550 Bc to 650 Ad
By Josef Wiesehofer

Josef Wiesehofer, one of the most respected scholars of the ancient world, provides here a comprehensive survey of the Persian Empire under the Achaemenids, the Parthians and the Sasanians. By focusing on the indigenous sources - written, archaeological and numismatic evidence from Persia - he avoids the traditional Western approach which has tended to rely so heavily on foreign and sometimes prejudiced Greek or Roman sources. Part of the freshness of this book comes from its presentation of a historical discussion of pre-Islamic Persia from a Near Eastern perspective.

Fighting monsters

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.
