Casual moments
Photos from the Qajar era
May 10, 1999
The Iranian
Court photographers of the late Qajar era mainly focused their cameras
on kings and princes, or official ceremonies. But there are also many pictures
of servants, low-ranking officials and ordinary people.
In "Ganj-e Peydaa", a collection of photos from Golestan Palce
(1998, Tehran, Cultural Research Bureau & Cultural Heritage Foundation),
the photographers are unknown and most of the subjects are unrecognized,
but the photos reveal a casual side that is rare in Iranian photography...

Outlook
Former mayor's imprisonment leads to groundswell of
support
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Rallies in the Iranian
capital, parliamentary demands for a pardon, angry editorials saying an
honest, hardworking man is being discarded "like tissue paper."
The groundswell of support for Tehran's former mayor, who began serving
a prison sentence last week for embezzlement, comes from the many Iranians
who believe a power struggle between hard-liners and reformists, not corruption,
landed Gholamhossein Karbaschi in jail ... FULL

* People endure
Yasmine Rafii writes: In
response to your
letter (Babak Banaei), being Iranian can mean many things, just as
being human can mean many things. Whether we identify with the Islamic
regime or not is really not the issue. Governments are not loved, it is
the land, its history and its people that matter most. Governments fall
every day, but the people endure ... I for one, would be most delighted
to read the words of real Islamic thinkers about issues that concern the
world today. But unfortunately, they seem to frighten the Islamic Republic
as much as the internet does ... FULL

The Greco-Persian Wars
By Peter Xerxes at Salamis Green
The long and bitter struggle between the great Persian empire and the
fledgling Greek states reached its high point with the extraordinary Greek
victory at Salamis in 480 B.C. The astonishing sea battle banished forever
the specter of Persian invasion and occupation. In this account, Green
brilliantly retells this historic moment, evoking the whole dramatic sweep
of events that the Persian offensive set into motion. 15 illustrations.
