May 11, 1999 (Neshat) - Three hundred and twenty five political and cultural personalities have issued a statement marking the passage of 170 days since the murder of [former labour minister] Daryush and [his wife] Parvaneh Foruhar. The statement, in part, says: "Like-minded people of this land, once again, raise their cry for justice against the ill-tempered cowards, whose criminal deed has bereaved the Iranian nation. * Khamenei declines to pardon jailed Tehran mayor

TEHRAN, May 11 (Reuters) - Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has rejected calls to issue a pardon for Tehran's former moderate mayor, who was jailed after being convicted for graft. In a letter read in parliament on Tuesday, Khamenei said: ``The authority to resolve such matters lies with the judiciary, and it is in the good of the country and the people if legal rulings are not undermined with different motives.'' ... * Khatami calls for greater tolerance

TEHRAN, May 11 (AFP) - Iranian President Mohammad Khatami appealed to the various political factions in the country on Tuesday to stop viewing each other as "rivals" and to display greater tolerance. "The various factions should refrain from making certain issues bigger than they are in order to drive out their rivals from the scene," the official IRNA news agency quoted Khatami as saying during a meeting with senior clerics in Tehran ... TEHRAN, May 9 (AFP) - Iranian fundamentalists disrupted a demonstration by moderate students on Sunday over the jailing of a liberal cleric accused of spreading propoganda hostile to the Islamic regime. Around 700 students gathered at Tehran university to call for the release of Mohsen Kadivar, a leading light of the reform movement in Iran who began an 18-month jail term last month ... FULL TEXT
