Poetry
A song for the old country
Poem
By Soma
September 17, 1999
The Iranian
Came upon this poem yesterday. It was written, in fact, in a night-club
off Esteqlal Street, downtown Istanbul in 1997 Don't know what to think
of it now. Once finished, you can only read your work from the outside.
Such is the case with this one. Nothing to write home about, but I remember
being emotionally struck at the time of its composition. And, to my surprise,
it does have bearing upon the current predicament.

Brooding boredom brews in the balmy batter of the big blue bay.
Soothing sobs that seldom seek their seats in eyes seared with sorrow,
Sneak their way in but seldom stay.
Green grows over groves of grass, ... GO

Iranian homosexuals are excluded, even abroad
By Yek Irani
September 16, 1999
The Iranian
The irony is that the world is gazing on the struggle of Iranians for
democracy, human rights and freedom. But this struggle excludes the rights
of homosexuals as they are not seen as part of the human race.
It is often pointed out by experts in the field of Iranian studies that
various regimes have suppressed minorities. One can hardly disagree with
that. But between these lines there hides a bitter reality that must be
mentioned.
The Iranian community of Montreal is homophobic not because of any tyrannical
regime but on its own free will ... GO

Elisa,
This started out as a letter to you, but it blew up. Inspirado por
ti.
Imagine -- or perhaps you might understand this all too well -- feeling
the entire range of human emotion in one day. You wake up sobbing, sad
for something inexplicable and incomprehensible, and with a cup of coffee
and a cigarette regain sanity long enough to eat breakfast and ride the
two buses you have to ride everday to get to school ... GO TO

Eliminate violence
... in all its forms, including the death penalty
By Hossein Bagher Zadeh
September 14, 1999
The Iranian
The following is a translation of an article published in the Persian
daily Nesaht in Tehran on Tuesday 24h August 1999. The article,
along with another on the topic of execution by Emadedin Baqi, led to a
huge outcry by certain politico-religious groups in Iran, culmination in
a statement by Iran's Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on September 1, denouncing
those 'who oppose the religious law of vengeance' and declaring them being
liable to death sentence. Neshat was shut down three days later.

The Iranian
Slanderous accusations against me are being repeated in parts of
the Iranian press and now a bounty has been put on my head by Jebheh,
the mouthpiece of the Ansar Hizbollah extremists. Here is a resposnse I
sent to the Tehran Times which printed some of these alleagtions
on September 2. My response was published in its Septemer 7 issue ...
