U.N. volunteer recalls learning Farsi

By Chris Linney
April 26, 2000
The Iranian

I first arrived in Tehran in early January 1971 and was surprised to find snow on the ground. In my small mind anywhere south and east of England was supposed to be warm and sunny. I was a 27 year-old United Nations volunteer, full of naïve idealism, but then, that is what being 27 is all about...

After a few days of formalities at the United Nations head office, we flew to Shiraz. Soon I was installed with twenty or so other volunteers in an out station of the University of Shiraz in a small village called Marvdasht. Here, for the next five weeks I was to learn Farsi! >>> GO TO FEATURE

Reformers Say Iran's Hard-Liners Plan Revolt

By Jonathan Lyons

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's reformers say they have learned of a ``master plan'' by hard-liners in the security forces and their allies to crush the movement for change and even topple the government of moderate President Mohammad Khatami.

They say some elements of the elite Revolutionary Guards, the police and the state broadcast monopoly have formed a ''crisis committee'' to fan social, political and religious tensions and pave the way for a possible coup d'etat >>> FULL TEXT

    Anyway

Abolfazl Insurance
From a joke circulated on the Internet.

New York (AP) - As many analyst are puzzled by continued correction and drop in stock market, senior analyst of Goozman Partners, James Hassanberg, has made several remarks that might be beneficial to some investors.

For example, he noted, " if investors had paid close attention in the past few weeks, they would have realized that April 13th and April 14th coincided with Taasooaa and Aashooraa. This is the time when Imam Hossein was brutally killed by Yazid's army. As the spirit of Imam Hossein has survived for hundreds of years, so will the stock market." >>> FULL TEXT

* Mehrjui: The director & and the man

Faramarz Kaviani writes: On Saturday April 22, Dariush Mehrjoui was at New York's Lincoln Center to have a talk. I thought, "What else could a middle-age Iranian guy living in the U.S. ask for on a Saturday afternoon?" I love Iran's blooming movie industry and Mehrjoui in particualr. But wait a minute. Don't get too excited! Always expect the unexpected!...

However, it seems like Mehrjoui the person is not as impressive as Mehrjoui the director ... Why doesn't Mr. Mehrjoui have that respect toward Iranian movie directors in general as well? Why exclude Kiarostami and attack other directors and even Fardin who died less than two weeks ago? >>> FULL TEXT

* Azizi still respected

Armin Khalili writes: I remember the times when Iran would get worldwide attention in sports: Takhti in wrestling, soccer players Ali Parvin, Hassan Roshan, Andranik Skandarian (who played for New York Cosmos in Major League Soccer), and many more great athletes.

Today here in San Francisco's Bay Area we have Khodadad Azizi who plays for the San Jose Earthquakes. Two weeks ago he received a red card and a three-week suspension. But yellow or red cards are part of the game. I don't know how to express myself but after all these years of playing soccer I can understand how a player could react in heated situations. It is just part of the game! >>> FULL TEXT

    Poetry

Translation of today's poem by Zara Houshmand:

When your love drives me crazy, that day
I dare things, madly, that demons would not
Your eyelash alone does to my heart
What the brush of the greatest artist cannot. -- Rumi
