Iran says 150 arrested so far over Khorramabad unrest
TEHRAN, Oct 5 (AFP) - Iranian police have arrested 150 people so far
in connection with the deadly unrest that marred a pro-reform student conference
in August, police officials were quoted as saying in Thursday's press.
Rahim Khorshidvand, head of the police in Lorestan province, said he was
still waiting for additional arrest warrants to be issued over the troubles

Wives of jailed journalists demand visiting, telephone rights
TEHRAN, Oct 5 (AFP) - Wives of imprisoned Iranian journalists called
on MPs Wednesday to intervene on behalf of their husbands, who they say
have been deprived of visiting and telephone rights, the official IRNA
news agency reported. Speaking on behalf of the women, Fariba Abbassgholi-Zadeh
said that her husband, Mashallah Shamsolvaezin, as well as Emmadeddin Baghi,
Akbar Ganji, Latif Safari, Hassan Yussefi Ashkevari and Ahmad Zidabadi,
have been prohibited from receiving visits or making telephone calls for

Reformist MP calls for rehabilitation of Ayatollah Montazeri
TEHRAN, Oct 3 (AFP) - A reformist Iranian legislator called Tuesday
for the rehabilitation of the liberal cleric elected to succeed the founder
of Iran's Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, but who was
forced to step down before ever taking up that mantle. In a speech to parliament
on Tuesday, MP Mostafa Taheri Najaf-Abadi asked whether it is "just
that this man (Montazeri), who fought next to the imam (Khomeini) for the
creation and defense of the Islamic republic, should be constrained in
his daily life, and theological schools deprived of his teaching."

Daily paper banned for picture of nude man
TEHRAN, Oct 1 (AFP) - A conservative Iranian daily newspaper aimed at
children and young adults was suspended by the press court for publishing
a picture of a naked man, press reports said on Sunday. Gonbade-Kaboud
was ordered closed for publishing the picture of the man in its last edition
on Saturday, the Tehran Times reported, adding that managing director Mohammad

Jews celebrate New Year while relatives languish in prison
October 1, 2000, SHIRAZ, Iran (AP) - The Jews in this southern Iranian
city went to synagogue Sunday to celebrate Rosh Hashana, the New Year.
Some visited the local prison to meet relatives who have been convicted
of spying for Israel. For the first time since their loved ones were detained
more than a year ago, the Jews were allowed to take food to the inmates,
