Iran closes notorious Tohid prison after protests
TEHRAN, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Iran's notorious Tohid prison, run by the
intelligence ministry, has been closed down, newspapers on Thursday quoted
a reformist parliamentarian as saying. ``The intelligence minister ordered
the closure of the (prison)...and nobody was held there when our delegation
visited,'' the daily Aftab-e Yazd quoted Ali Akbar Mousavi-Khoeini as saying.

Detained dissident in Iran suffering from diabetes
Sept. 13, Teheran (dpa) - Hassan Yussefi-Ashkevari, a detained dissident
in Iran , is suffering from diabetes and should be released from jail for
medical reasons, the students news agency ISNA reported Wednesday. In a
letter to the judiciary, the dissident's wife, Mohtaram Yussefi-Ashkevari,
said her husband has had several attacks in prison during the night which
temporarily even led to partial paralysis. She warned of dire consequences

Schoolgirls win reprieve from head scarves, black coats
TEHRAN, Sept 15 (AFP) - Iranian girls will be allowed to take off their
obligatory head scarves at school and wear coats in colors besides black
for the first time in 19 years when classes start in late September. Girls
aged between 9 and 11 will be released from the obligation to wear the
traditional and mostly black head scarf, or maqna-e, which covers their

Conservatives blame reformists for unrest
TEHRAN, Sept 14 (AFP) - A conservative investigative body blamed reformist
politicians Thursday for last month's unrest in Khorramabad, western Iran,
but its conclusions were promptly rejected by the National Security Council
headed by reformist President Mohammad Khatami. The State Inspectorate
Organisation singled out Deputy Interior Minister Mostafa Tajzadeh, a bete
noire of conservatives, and the local branch of the reformist Islamic Iran

Rely less on prisons, head of judiciary says
TEHRAN, Sept 14 (AFP) - Iran's overcrowded prisons should be considered
only a last resort for criminals as the country looks for other ways to
bring down crime, judiciary chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi-Shahroudi said,
as cited Thursday by the official IRNA news agency. Pointing to the "negative
social consequences" of imprisonment, Shahroudi said he did not recommend
the jailing of criminals, calling on officials to make "exhaustive
efforts to prevent the bad results of imprisonment."

Journalist missing for two years
13 September 2000, Paris (Reporters sans frontières) - In a letter
to the head of the judiciary, Ayatollah Shahroudi, RSF expressed its deep
concern about journalist Pirouz Davani, who disappeared at the end of August
1998. The organisation, which asked at that time for an inquiry into this

Iran indicts alleged murderers of dissidents

including senior intelligence officials, on charges of murdering dissidents,

New reformist daily hits newsstands

Khamenei's brother summoned to court
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - The younger brother of Iran's supreme leader has
been summoned to court on charges related to the reformist newspaper he
launched in June, his aide said Monday. The summons order for Hadi Khamenei
was the third issued by the Special Clergy Court since the Hayat-e-Nou

Suspects in murders of dissidents informed of charges, trial soon
TEHRAN, Sept 11 (AFP) - The suspects in the 1998 assassinations of several
Iranian dissidents and intellectuals have 10 days to find lawyers after
being told of the charges against them, state radio said Monday. The report,
quoting judicial officials, said 18 suspects have now been informed of
specific charges they will face when they appear in Tehran's military court
