ASHGABAT, Aug 13 (Reuters)- Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi urged five states surrounding the Caspian Sea to speed up work on determining its legal status because the unresolved issue blocked major energy projects. ``It is impossible to launch the construction of any oil and gas pipelines as long as the status remains unresolved,'' Kharrazi told a news conference after talks with Turkmenistan's President Saparmurat Niyazov and other top officials... * Iran proposes Caspian oil pipeline-Azeri official

BAKU, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Iran has proposed building a 300-km (190-mile) pipeline costing $400 million to transport Caspian energy resources through its territory, an official in the Azeri government, who did not want to be identified, said on Thursday. ``Iran proposes to build a pipeline linking Baku with Tebriz in the north of Iran and then link it with the country's pipeline system,'' he told Reuters... (The Economist) - SINCE Iran's would-be liberal President Muhammad Khatami took office a year ago, he has been too busy with the political battle against conservatives to spend much time worrying about the economy. Now the statistics have made it impossible to go on like that. On August 2nd the president called for sweeping economic reforms. "Our economy is chronically ill. It will not be cured unless we make fundamental changes," he said.
