* On TV: A Conversation between an American and an Iranian woman
The forthcoming VIS a VIS: Beyond the Veil (premiering Thursday, August
27, 1998 at 10 p.m. ET on PBS; check local listings) brings together two
women, one in suburban Washington, D.C., the other in Teheran, for an intense
and moving exchange over four days. Deborah Whitley and Sima Daad share
the same profession, both are high school English teachers, but ideologically,
each is formed by her own country. Sima Daad embraces and defends the ideology
and policy that governs the Islamic Republic of Iran, while Deborah Whitley
comes from a liberal American background. In the course of eight days of
intense and moving exchange, they confront and explore manyof the profound
social and political differences that have kept their countries at odds.

* Christine Mirzayan murdered in Washington, DC
Tuesday's Washington Post reported: The woman found beaten to death
in Georgetown [Washington, DC] over the weekend has identified as Christine

TEXT
On this sad occasion, I wish to propose that we the Iranian and Iranian-American
communities commemorate the loss of this young woman in some fashion --
perhaps by setting up a reward fund for the apprehension of the perpetrator
of the crime against her, or helping her husband/family in some other manner.
I shall offer to organize this effort. Let me tell you a bit about myself
to put you at greater ease with the idea. My vitals are below for those
of you who do not know me:
Full Name: Haleh Vaziri
Citizenship: U.S., born in Michigan of Iranian parents in 1963
Profession: Assistant Professor, Researcher & Writer in International
Politics
Current Place of Residence: Washington, DC
Email: HVaziri@aol.com
Please contact me by email if you are interested in this proposal, and
perhaps we can all put our heads together. I sincerely believe that this
tragedy should compel each and every one of us to reflect on the fragility
of life. We should put aside our differences -- political, religious, or
otherwise -- to act as a community and assist the authorities and/or the
family in whatever way we can.

* Are you Iranian-American? Want to be in a film?
I am making a film in Iran which starts shooting in Feb 1999. One of
the things I am doing when I come back to the United States in looking
for an actor. I need a man around 24-years old who speaks Persian with
an accent and is willing to come to Iran for 2+ months and have the lead
role in this film. An Iranian-American. I was thinking the Internet would
be a good place to start. they could contact me via email, then perhaps
send a photo or short video.

* Know of any outstanding Iranian-Americans?
I am in the process of writing a book in English with the following
tentative title: "Iran-America: Can The Marital Discord Between The
Two Superpowers Be Resolved?" The book will have a short history of
Iran, a chronicle of the Iran-U.S. relations-1880-1980, contribution of
Iran and Iranians to the world in general and to the U.S. in particular,
followed by an epilogue containing my thoughts reagrding the resumption
of the relations. The book will probably be co-authored by Professor Peter
Avery, a world renown scholar and one of the editors of the "Cambridge
History of Iran".
I am requsting assistance and input from everybody for the "contribution
of Iraninans" to the U.S. I am seeking the names and a short vitae
of contemporary outstanding Iranians in the U.S. from all walks of life,
e.g. Bijan in fashion, prominent NASA scientists, Sia Armajani who designed
the Olymic cauldron in Atlanta, Mat Ghaffari who won a silver medal for
the U.S....
I would appreciate if you kindly disseminate my request to your readership.
Best regards,
Badi Badiozamani
