* Local elections spark new rift within regime
TEHRAN, Jan 29 (AFP) - Preparations for Iran's first ever municipal
elections next month sparked a new rift Friday between the government of
moderate President Mohammed Khatami and his conservative opponents. Interior
Minister Abdolvahab Mussavi-Lari slammed the conservative- dominated Supervision
Council for rejecting "a significant number of candidates" for

TEHRAN, Jan 27 (Reuters) - A conservative screening board has barred
several prominent moderate backers of President Mohammad Khatami from running
in Iran's first nationwide local elections next month, newspapers said
on Wednesday. The daily Salam said Abdollah Nouri, a key Khatami ally and
former interior minister, moderate newspaper editor Saeid Hajjarian and
pro-Khatami student leader Ebrahim Asgharzadeh were among about 50 Tehran
candidates rejected by the board dominated by the president's opponents

on Ayatollah Hussein Ali Montazeri, the disgraced designate successor of

TEHRAN, Jan 27 (AFP) - Iran's intelligence ministry said Wednesday it
had arrested several of its agents, accusing them of clandestinely distributing
political leaflets. "Several agents who were involved in distributing

Jan 25, (BBC) - An Iranian newspaper renowned for its outspoken criticism
of the conservative clergy has been attacked by unidentified assailants.
