* Call for Papers: Qajar art

THE QAJAR EPOCH Culture, Art & Architecture in Qajar Persia 2-4
September 1999 The 'Qajar Epoch' conference will be held at the School
of Oriental and African Studies in London from the 2nd until the 4th of
September 1999. The focus of the conference will be on the Culture, Art
& Architecture of the Qajar period. The conference is part of a two
conference series. The second conference, which will focus on Religion
and Society of the Qajar Period, will be held in September 2000.
The purpose of the conferences is to invite both established and younger
scholars in the field to present their most recent research, new interpretations
or assessments of the period. Papers must be presented either in English
or Persian and should not exceed 35 minutes so as to allow 10 minutes for
discussion. The organisers reserve the right to refuse any proposal not
corresponding to the object and the academic level of the conference. Papers
will be presented by theme and arranged by subject in sequential sessions...

* Nader Naderpour Fall classes at UCLA
Nader Naderpour has been invited to the UCI & UCLA campuses to teach
numerous courses in Persian literature and culture (all in Farsi). Due
to the continuing interest in the Iranian community, the new series of
Mr. Naderpour's classes are scheduled as follows:
Topic: Ferdowsi, Khayyam, Nezami, Molavi, Saadi, and Hafez's greatest
works will be reviewed along with a brief biography of each. The only required
prerequisite for this class is your own enthusiasm & aspiration for
learning about Iranian literature/culture.
Location: UCLA, Dodd Hall, Room 175.
Time: Every other Sunday, 8 meetings, starting this Sunday Nov 8th,
3:00-5:00. Tuition: $150 for all sessions. Free for students (any college/university).

* Research Fellowship in Iranian Studies
The American Institute of Iranian Studies (AIIrS) offers a six-month
fellowship tenable in Tehran. The recipient will also be the representative
of AIIrs in Iran. The period of the fellowship will be January through
June, 1999. The stipend, contingent on the receipt of funding, will be
at the level of an assistant professor, plus transportation. Applicants
must have their Ph.D. in hand, speak Persian well, and be U.S. citizens.
Selection will begin in November and candidates may be interviewed in Chicago
during the MESA meetings December 3-6.
Applications should include a CV, details of the applicant's research
project, and the names and addresses of two referees, and should be sent
to: Professor Michael Bonine, American Institute of Iranian Studies, Department
of Geography, Harvill Building, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721.

First Exhibition of Persian Painting from the Qajar Dynasty, 1785-1925

Press Preview Thursday, October 22, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
The first major exhibition to explore visual arts in Persia during the
Qajar Dynasty, focusing on extraordinary large-scale court and popular
religious paintings, will be presented at the Brooklyn Museum of Art from
October 23, 1998, through January 24, 1999. Providing a window into imperial
as well as daily life of a vanished culture, Royal Persian Paintings: The
Qajar Epoch, 1785-1925 will comprise 106 exceptional works. It includes
important loans from thirty-six internationally renowned private and public
collections in seven countries. Among the lending institutions are The
State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg; the Victoria and Albert Museum,
London; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Institute of Oriental Studies
of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg; the Arthur M. Sackler
Gallery, Smithsonian Institutions, Washington; and the Musee de Louvre
in Paris. Also included in the exhibition will be a selection from the
Museum's collection, which contains the most important holdings of Qajar

* Habibollah Payman's lectures in Europe
The program for Dr Peyman's meetings and talks in Europe
Dr. Habibullah Peyman, leader of the Jonbesh-e Mosalmanan-e Mobarez
(JMM), has been invited by the Secretary of the German Green Party faction
in the European Parliament to tour Europe.
The Council for the Co-ordination of democratic Organizations (Shuray-e
Hamahangy- e Nahadhay-e Democratic) has arranged for him to give lectures
and to have meetings and talks with Iranians in various cities of Europe.
The main topic of the lectures is "An Analysis of the present situation
of the Movement for Freedom and People's rule in Iran". The
dates and names of the host organisations in various cities are as follows:

* Berkeley play based on Hedayat's story
BEHIND GLASS WINDOWS: A play written and directed by Torange Yeghiazarian
based on a short story by Iranian writer, Saadegh Hedayat. A shattering
love story that questions our perception of love and reality. This contemporary
stage adaptation of the original short story focuses on the illusory nature
of love and relationships from the perspective of second generation Iranians
