With you still
February 14, 2001
The Iranian
I'll be with you still
when Mowlana runs out of words,
when poetry runs dry,
when the last song is over,
when old men close their eyes.
I'll be with you still
in the silence of the desert.
Cut the engine. Listen to the night.
Listen to the stars,
to their far, cold cry.
I'll be with you still
when the lovemaking's done,
when the sweat has dried,
when I've cried as much as I can cry.
I'll be with you still
when only one of us has gone.
when the storm has passed,
when the ocean is calm.
I'll be with you in the silence
of the lonely nights.
I'll be with you still in the dawn.
