I just couldn't resist this: this comment is for Mr. Dariush and Mr. "abarmard" ;)

Mr. 'abarmard" (the nake cracks me up, whatever he lacks, this guy does not lack an uber-inflated ego :) ) you probably do not get her points due to low English comprehension ability, and may be lack of native intelligence. She actually is pointing out valid issues and shortcomings. Out of focus? She is delivering a speech. Even on the fly and in 4 minutes and 14 seconds, she makes far more sense than all your writings put together.

Mr. Dariush, feel sorry for your own sorry self. She is a published and widely rea author. Serious people, not just a bunch of pathologically negative and aging ex-pinkos, pay attention to what she has to say. May be you need counseling yourself. My girlfriend is a top notch shrink, want an appointment?

a question

by Mineral_Water (not verified) on

Hello Mrs. Nafisi,

Actually its a long time that I'd like to ask you some questions... because I'm curious about your personal opinion.

I listened to you speech now about crisis and I wanted to ask you something.
The people in poor states suffering hunger and homelessness and whose lives have been desperation from the beginning, do you think they have stopped asking questions?
I think they ask questions every single day of there entire poor lives? no... i think even every single min.

For instance there are poor women in India who have to sell one of there kidneys in order to receive something about 700 USD so that they can feed their children.

Or there is a young woman living in some small town whose life has been destroyed by her family and social pressure on her... she's asking questions (how can I stand up again? how can I have a small taste of life again?) every single day.

Nobody means to be normative but probably it would be wise to give a precise description of the crisis that you have on your mind while giving the speech. Namely crisis in consumerism in the West.

Isn't everything about her

by dariush (not verified) on

Isn't everything about her "smugly"?

For me she was always strange. Her new book finally made it clear for me. By Iranian standards, she has had a terrible childhood. I feel sorry for her now, I hope she can get some consoling to make her a better person.

Abarmard

She seems

by Abarmard on

Too emotional and out of focus. Good, hope that her "new" ideas take form!

not impressed she is just

not impressed
she is just raising the questions that everyone likes to ask, so she gets the attention of the audience sot ehy can buy book.
In many corporations the dogs who bark get promoted just because they bark at others in project review meeting and they have no answers or solutions to offer.

What?!

by Ajam (not verified) on

Crisis is good?! Nowadays they let anybody make speeches! Isn't that what Jerry Falwell used to preach (albeit from a different angle)? So, is the humanity supposed to wait for a crisis to see the light? What about those who see the flaws in the system from the beginning?!

Azarin Sadegh

Beautiful speech!

by Azarin Sadegh on

Smart, witty and original! She's a true inspiration...I just love her!

I am reading right now her new book "Things I've been silent about" and I found it pretty fascinating so far...

Thanks a lot for posting it! Azarin

Now only if Azar Nafisi would meet with Jimmy Carter face to face and for a nice conversation, what would she leave with?

speak for yourself

The audacity to say "we". I've never been smug in anyway, neither have I ever stopped thinking and questioning.

Who does she think she's talking to?

I agree with Charandoparand. What a smug speech

BRAVO MADAME NAFISI !

by Darius Kadivar on

Mrs. Nafisi is truly the Opposite of all the "ANN TELECTUAL's" we have come across so often in the Arena of so-called Self Promoted and self indulgent Iranian Intelligenstia of the past 30 years.

SHE FOR A CHANGE IS A TRUE AND REFRESHING GEM !

On Charlie Rose a few years ago:

Keep Up the Good Job Azar Jaan and ignore the gratuitous critics you have been unjustly subject too by the regular ANN TELECTUALS of no substance but their blind hate and individual and individualistic jealousies to say the least.

Best,

DK
