Omid in space

Iran launches Omid (Hope) satellite carried by Safir-2 rocket

BBC: Iran says it has launched its first domestically made satellite into orbit. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the launch had been successful and that with it Iran had "officially achieved a presence in space". The satellite, carried on a Safir-2 rocket, was meant for telecommunication and research purposes, state TV said. A US state department official said the launch was of "great concern" and could lead to ballistic missile development. Iran insists its intent is peaceful>>>

Darius:
I completly agree with you baradar that Iran needs huge reforms and political changes. But if we dont show defense capabilities such as these, I promise you, there wont be any Iran in the future, so that we can fight for women, workers and press rights and so on.

Just because I hail Irans rocket science, defence capabilities etc does not mean I hail Irans womens rights etc.

The enemy is at the doorstep and they are waiting for us to F it up.

Farrad:
If you cant see the tactical, economical and strategicial value of having such technology and nuclear technology, and how it will benefit our children back home in the future, then you really have not read much about it my friend.

The ability to launch your own satellites without being dependent on Russian commercial and expensive rockets is a huge strategic upper hand. Telecommunications, national security, general space exploration etc depend on such tech.

Sure, rockets are not a necessity in Iran, but hope is. For a nation, vision is right up there with schools and hospitals on the list of necessities.

Your statement, "It is just one way for IRI to turn up peoples patriotic feelings and support for them, just like the nuclear program," commits the fallacy of composition. Patriotic feelings and support for the IRI are two unrelated concepts.

The Same Reaction

by Nader Vanaki on

A US state department official said the launch was of "great concern" and could lead to ballistic missile development.

What a joke.  Every technological advance is a "concern" now.  This administration is run by the same clowns as the previous one who claimed Saddam bought Uranium from Nigeria!

Let them make their own stories but we should continue on our own.  Soon they will realize that their sanctions are not effective.

This is great news and we're proud of the scientists who did it!

by farrad02 on

But it doesn't change the nature and fabric of IRI regime and what it is doing to our mother-land in many areas!  And it doesn't help the people of Iran in their most pressing problems!

The regime's report card on many issues in social, economic and political domains is filled with failing grades. All you need to do is to experience a health issue in any of Iran's cities (never mind the rural areas) and see the effectiveness of the health care system. Look at the young people and their prospects for the future. Just try to get together with 2 other friends and discuss a good book over coffee, more than once or twice!Just examine the UN indicators on health and social development and see where Iran stands among other nations of the world; certainly not worthy of a nation who is capable of putting a satellite in orbit, is it?! Try to implement a new idea for a product or service in Iran, etc, etc.

So, they spent billions and dedicated many scientists to the task of perfecting rocket technology! And sure, we are proud of the young scientists who did this work, but how does it exactly help the Iranian people and their most pressing issues today?!

VOUS N'AUREZ PAS MA LIBERTE DE PENSER ! ;0)

TO ALL THE ANONYMOUS ATTACKERS, IRI APOLOGISTS,PSEUDO PATRIOTS AND HAMAS TEARJERKERS ! HERE IS MY ANSWER TO YOU AND YOUR PRO IRI EGO BOOSTERS !

Ma liberté de pensée by Florent Pagny ( Price $0.99)

Prenez mon lit, les disques d’or, ma bonne humeur,

Be Careful and not cheerful

by choghok on

Although there is a matter of pride  in this news be careful who and what you cheer.

The money to develop all these rockets comes from Revolutionary guards which is a maffia state within the state and controls 1/3 of the countries wealth. It is the same institution that is the present government of Iran so it would not be strange if Ahmaghinezhad has put a lot of people's money into this project as well.

There are no doubts about Iranian scientists abilities and achievements. But in a faulty system like IRI where the state is not even able to fix peoples basic needs like schooling and hospitals it is a surprise to see that financial and management part also working. Rockets are not a necesity in an Iran where poverty and illiteracy still exist. It is just one way for IRI to turn up peoples patriotic feelings and support for them, just like the nuclear program. Something that by reading some of the comments here I think they have achieved.

Do not fall into their trap.

I would rather cheer and be proud the day most of Iranians would be understanding and democratic people and IRI would be a part of history.

Also the battery was called "Nirou : Power" made by Varta, and changed the lable in Yellow.

This at the time of Shah, when we have all technical assistance.

BTW : Since Dr. Ahmadinejad comes to power a lot of things goto air with succes with 3 "Ya Hossain".

Thses are all results of "Sigheh, Nekah, Jema and Zena" it makes the brain fast working and all Iranian engineers build this thing with no perrior experinces and easy finding the parts (at Wall-Mart)in just 2 years (Much faster than Israelis).

You ask: "Was an Aftabeh included with this satellite? Just curious..."

I don't know buddy. Why don't you ask Zion? She seems to know everything there is to know about Iranian aviation, international agreements, and Persian language. She might know this one, too, or she will refer to her desk manual to pull out an answer for you (or a bunny rabbit, whichever is more appropriate in your case). She will. Don't forget to thank her, she won't forget kindness like that!

Fair

You guys are hilarious..

by Fair on

When did I say ANYTHING about Shah being good and not condemning his mistakes, etc.?

Yes, indeed this is a matter of pride for Iranians, myself included. That is why the FIRST word in my post was CONGRATULATIONS. In fact I sympathize with the poor scientist and engineer who works on this stuff, contributes to their country, and is not allowed to think, believe, eat, drink, dress, and go to the bathroom how they want. I never say anybody should or should not take pride in this launch, or what to think or what not to think, I am just expressing my opinion. I am not trying to "fool anyone" or be condescending or anything. SO GET OVER IT.

Now for those of you who are offended by the notion of Iran being stuck in the 7th century:

A country who stones people to death for punishment is stuck in the 7th century.

A country who calls a woman half a man is stuck in the 7th century.

A country who rapes women in prison before they execute them because they cannot be virgins when executed is stuck in the 7th century.

A country who does not give you the right to exist unless you follow one of 4 religions is stuck in the 7th century.

A country who says you must wash your hand after coming in contact with a Christian, Jew, or dog because they are untouchable is stuck in the 7th century.

A country that says a woman should be forced to cover her hair or go to jail because a man might look at her and corruption might happen is stuck in the 7th century.

Shall I go on?

So for those of you who question when I was last in Iran, the answer is VERY RECENTLY. Good thing they didn't know my real thoughts, because I would have been denied the right to exist under the law.

The real question is, WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WERE IN IRAN? Because all of the above holds TODAY. THIS MINUTE. If you notice, that is.

You're proud of Iran sending up a North Korean Copy of a 50 year old Russian rocket which was itself a copy of a 65 year old German rocket? You cannot even have an ADULT discussion with your compatriot! Oh, what, am I not your compatriot? Because I don't happen to subscribe to your opinion?

As far as Razi, Avicenna, et al, of course Iranians, myself included, are very proud of them. But THEY WEREN'T LIVING IN THE 21st CENTURY. Their country and system were not behind for the times and the world they were living in. I have news for you in case you didn't realize: WE ARE BEHIND TODAY.

A thousand rockets and satellites cannot help a backward intolerant mind.

It is so sad to see some idiots blindly and hatefully try to close their eyes on some basic realities. This will only cost them heartache.
Any one who puts down any small step great Iranian people take forward is either against Iran progress or have a vested interest in destroying Iran for their own benefits.

Just take a look at what Zion says: He is so CONCERNED about loss of Irani lives in commuter airplanes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG! If I was so concerned as Zion is, I would go and protest to US state Dept to allow sale of commercial plane spare parts for HUMANITERIAN PURPOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To the one calling himself "Fair"

by Ajam (not verified) on

Do yourself a favour and try not to act like a grandpa with your condescending ranting. You can't pull it off, for you do not even sound mature enough to feign impartiality! you,re not fooling anyone! Why are you trying to make this about Palestine, Israel or Darfur -- or what have you? What does this have to do with any of that?! This is about Iran and Iranians. Whether you like it or not, this is a matter of pride for Iranians.

You know nothing about Iran and Iranians. If you did, you would not called them "stuck in the 7th century." perhaps this does not mean anything to you, but please, speak for yourself and not on behalf of all Iranians. Not only this, but even a soccer victory would mean so much for Iranians all over the country to pour in the street and fly the Iranian (yes, IRI's) flag well into the wee hours of morning. What makes you think that you know things about the Iranian society which are unknown to millions of Iranians? You are the one who is supposed to come to terms with tolerating others' views. Don't try to portray your demons as those of the whole population of Iran!

IRI is a despotic regime, so was the monarchy. If you really care about Iranian's rights and freedom, why don't you say anything about the breach of human rights under the Shah? Why does it always start with the "during the past 30 year," and not before that? Didn't Shah build the dreaded Evin and Gohardasht prisons? Didn't Shah torture thousands of political prisoners in Evin, Ghezelhesar, Ghasre... prisons? Wasn't a woman's right half as much as a man during the Shah's rule? What makes Shah better than IRI? Is it because women could wear mini skirts?

Yes, IRI's elections are not fair, but when was the last (or even first) time that Shah held an election? The reason that demonstrations are suppressed under IRI is that at least people can make it to the streets to protest. But when was the last time a demonstration (other that pro-shah 4th of Aban and 6th of Bahman) took place under the Shah. Yes, I know, it was when the Shah hand no control over the population in 1978 and was eventually kicked out of Iran!

What does that all mean? That until a regime approved by you rules Iran, people have no right to take pride in their country's achievements? Who do you think you are?!

Pick your battle Mr./Ms. Fair
We have a choice to accept this as a leap toward greater developments or cramp it and reject it because it was done under supervision of the mullahs! the reality is the PEOPLE of Iran are the owner of that technology and whatever else that is or has achieved in Iran. The government of Iran like her entire history can come and go what remains behind and we celebrate has nothing to do with the regeme that is ruling Iran good or bad. For example: Kharazmi invented Aljebra or Razi discovered Alcohol, or Avesina was the greatest Physician till the 18th century but they all wrote their findings in arabic because Iran was under their rules and they had no other choice. But I guess if you were living at the time I take it your view would have been that they are traitors? and it is a shame that we have people that think in lines other than politics?
Some people are wired to think and care about politics, some are about math and others poetry, The arabs are long gone, but the name Razi or Avesina or Kharazmi is still announced proudly by all iranians across the globe and defend them dearly. and that is what has happend in iran today! the mullahs will leave sooner or later, but the achievement of those smart, clever and hard working kids that did this will always stay in our minds and heart. u must deal with things one by one step by step and don`t reject everything."pick your battle"

Shah didn't deserve this great nation

by Saeed A (not verified) on

Iranians could have made all these accomplishments even 50 years ago if Shah was not a nokar of the west to sell the country and all its resources to foreigners. Of course, the west doesn't like to see a progressed nation in the Middle East sitting on an ocean of petroleum. No wonder they have always supported their loyal servants like Shah and the Saudi kings to suppress the national talents and create consumer societies for them. Compare the scientific accomplishments of the 30 years under Shah to those of the last 30 years with all the sanctions, war, and other restrictions imposed on the country. I'm not defending the ruling mullahs. I'm defending the talented Iranians who will do wonder if they have the opportunity.

Congratulations, and grow up

by Fair on

Congratulations to all Iranians for this scientific and engineering achievement.

But such achievements mean nothing if your country is stuck in the 7th century.

They mean nothing if Iranians cannot even have a basic discussion and tolerate each other's views.

Mr. Kadivar spoke his heart, expresses his concern for his country honestly, and look at Iranians here ridicule him for not sharing their enthusiasm, and even bringing once again Palestine and Israel and Gaza into this.

Which country are you guys from anyway?  And if you are so concerned about other people's suffering, why don't I EVER hear any of you condemning Darfur, which is happenning at the hands of the Sudanes government and Muslim militias?  A government that has received military aid from Iran?Or about Rwanda?  Can you even find it on a map?  Do you even know how many Rwandans were killed in that genocide?  Or you don't give a damn because they were not your "muslim brothers"?  (the same "brothers" wholeheartedly supported Saddam in raping Iran by the way..what a family!)

Don't make the mistake that the Shah made- modernization needs to happen in the mentality and minds of your people first and then you can make cars and rockets and industries and so on, and then it will mean something.  It means NOTHING if you send a rocket into space but you stone people to death and you officially count a woman as half a man and do not acknowledge the existence or citizenship of anyone who does not follow a state sanctioned religion in your constitution, and need I go on?

This sort of empty pride is the same crap that let thugs like Stalin and his successors (who also put satellites into space before anybody by the way)  and Hitler (who put up the world's first jet and rocket, etc.) stay in power for so long, and the IRI is no different.  Remember you are in the 21st century.  What is your vision for your country?  Honestly?

Grow up.  Be
